Interview: Sigil Games on Vanguard: Saga of Heroes & Widescreen Gaming

Vanguard LogoA bit over 18 months ago, Brad McQuaid (aka "Aradune Mithara") stopped by the forum to say that he had gotten Vanguard: Saga of Heroes to run on his Dell 2405. You may recognize Brad's name, as he and Jeff Butler (also at Sigil) were two of the visionaries and programmers for the original Everquest.

Thinking I had nothing to lose, I asked about getting an interview with Sigil, about Vanguard, and widescreen gaming. Brad agreed, and I delivered a lengthy interview. Unfortunately they were entering their first closed beta, and then there was E3, and then the change in publishers. Never giving up the dream, I cut the interview down and kept bugging their Community Manager about getting the interview.

Just a few days ago we received the interview back from Ryan Elam, Director of Technology at Sigil Games, and April Jones, PR Manager. I'm still waiting on screenshots, but I thought I'd go ahead and post the interview. To discuss the interview, or Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, hit this thread over on the forums.

Monitor Refresh Rate and Lag Testing

Tools

Download the testing clock from here.

Testing

  1. Hook up two monitors: 1) Your LCD to test, and 2) a CRT for reference, or another LCD for comparison. This can be done using two outputs from your video card, and running in mirror mode, or getting a splitter.
  2. Fire up the clock program, and look for any differences.

FOV Calculations (Complicated Math Version) - For Developers

I wrote this little guide for myself, preparing the arrival of my Dell 2005FPW and of course tweaks for games with proper aspect ratio. The easiest way to use this is pick the RESOLUTION for your game and follow the formula. Also copying and pasting this to NOTEPAD with MONOSPACED fonts will make it more READ-ABLE =)

I hope it helps people out. And for the record 1280x768 is 16:9.6 Aspect Ratio according to my calculations. Please don't bash me if any information is wrong. I'll correct them if proven wrong.
