Fantasy

Fantasy-themed games are games where the plot, theme, and setting involve magic, monsters, and/or other supernatural elements.

Rise of the Argonauts

Rise of the Argonauts is a 3rd person action RPG brought to you by Liquid Entertainment (who also made the nice warcraft clone, Battle Realms, in 2001) in the last month of 2008. Throughout the game you will meet other characters who will join you as argonauts. They will stay with you on your ship. When you leave the ship, you can pick who you want to accompany you. This is similar to games like KOTOR and Mass Effect. This game received above average review scores. Some people have complained that the game has way too many dialog and not enough action. I think that's not fair.

Planescape: Torment

Planescape: Torment is a top-down RPG made by Black Isle Studios (closed in 2003) and released in 1999. This game focuses more on the story telling (the 'role playing' part of RPG) than fighting. It has some really nice and funny dialogs delivered in both voice and text. You can avoid many combat situation by talking your way out of it. Which is pretty nice. The game received very high review scores but didn't sell too well. I was hoping for a sequel after I played through it the first time on my old junky computer way back when.

Arx Fatalis

What can one say about Arx Fatalis? It's a 1st person RPG from way back (originally released in 2002) made by Arkane Studios (same folks who did "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic"). It was meant to be Ultima Underworld III but due to not being able to secure a license became its own game. I'm glad it's not tied to an existing franchise. It uses a skill based system as well as requiring the player to use mouse gestures to cast spells. The game is in the same vein as Morrowind/Oblivion but is much, much smaller in scale than either.

Prince of Persia (2008)

The game has an ancient Persian setting, although the exact century is not revealed. In the game, the player assumes the role of the Prince, whose name is not revealed in the game. The Prince is accompanied by a girl named Elika, whom he met after a large sandstorm diverted him from his course and he ended up in a mysterious land. Players traverse many different environments using the Prince's acrobatic abilities to scale walls and even crawl on the ceilings. Throughout the journey, players combat various different enemies as they attempt to cleanse the land of corruption.

Mount & Blade

This is a sandbox combat simulator specializing in large battles. Indie developer!
Hand-to-hand, horse combat, castle sieges, that kind of thing.

King's Bounty: The Legend

A "remote cousin" of the Heroes of Might & Magic series, King's Bounty : The Legend combines turn-based battles and real-time exploration in a lenghty singleplayer campaign.

Titan Quest

Titan Quest is an action RPG by THQ, in the vein of Diablo II. The game is in the historical fantasy genre. Titan Quest is a 3D 'hack and slash' (acton RPG) featuring monsters inspired by ancient mythologies. It has gorgeous graphics, day/night cycle, ragdoll animations, WYSIWYG loot system - and of course, heaps of equipment to collect.
Immortal Throne adds in a whole new chapter (all-new places, quests, monsters and loot), a new mastery with its unique skills, and an array of other new gameplay elements.

The Chronicles of Spellborn

The Chronicles of Spellborn is a MMORPG, developed by Spellborn International and distributed by Frogster Interactive, set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. Spellborn uses the Unreal Engine, featuring a so-called European Art approach and contains notable contributions from Jesper Kyd.

Spellborn distinguishes itself from other MMORPGs by emphasizing the focus on story line, separating the look and the statistics of gear, integrating Player vs Environment and Player vs Player and offering combat that is fast paced and more reliant on player skill.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

WOW is the blockbuster MMO from from Blizzard, set in their Warcraft universe. I did this DR the same week Wrath of the Lich King came out, so this could be considered the WotLK client.

This DR is out of date for the current state of the game (June 2014). Please see the entry for Pandaria.
