You're right, Eyefinity has evolved. Beginning with Radeon R2xx series Eyefinity does not require one DP connection for every group of 3 identical screens anymore; so you won't need an active adapter. I currently have a system with:

i7-5820K
16gb DDR4 ram
2x AMD HD7950 in crossfire
3x samsung monitors connected via
GPU 1: DVI > DVI cable > HDMI monitor
GPU 1: HDMI > HDMI cable > HDMI monitor
