Hi,
I used to use this forum a lot back in the day for eyefinity, but its been a while!
I currently have a system with:
i7-5820K
16gb DDR4 ram
2x AMD HD7950 in crossfire
3x samsung monitors connected via
GPU 1: DVI > DVI cable > HDMI monitor
GPU 1: HDMI > HDMI cable > HDMI monitor
GPU 1: DP > Active adaptor > DVI cable> HDMI monitor
I am looking at upgrading my cards as they run most games on ultra settings (except GTA V, almost, but not quite!) and I was looking at the AMD R9 390X. I think ill buy one at first, then another later.
As its been many years since setting up eyefinity and things may have changed, do I still need my active adaptor? My monitors only have a HDMI port on them and wont be changing them. Im hoping eyefinity has moved on to the point I just need new cables!
Thanks in advance!

You're right, Eyefinity has evolved. Beginning with Radeon R2xx series Eyefinity does not require one DP connection for every group of 3 identical screens anymore; so you won't need an active adapter. Hard to confirm on AMD's mess of an official site, but all articles about the R9 290 mentioned it and user testimonies abound...
Re: Old school to new school
i wouldn't buy a R9- 390 right now.
If you wait for 2-3 more months the AMD Vega will release, new GPU's or prices of 390 will drop.

scavvenjahh is correct. With the new GPUs you won't need any adapters. They will have 3x DP outputs, plus an HDMI. You can do DP>HDMI cables, that won't require an adapter. Also agree with Haldi. RX Vega just announced, and prices on all the GPUs - 3xx series and the Fury X will be dropping.

Thats excellent news, so ill just buy some DP>HDMI cables if needed when I buy my cards.

Thanks for the heads up, I was looking around for 2nd hand on ebay anyway, but I can wait a few months, no hurry for the upgrade!
