Problem with My setup

Post by nips_uk »

Hello,

I just got 3 new flatscreens for my pc and im having problems setting up 3x1 eyefinity.

this is my setup:

AMD Phenom II X4 965BE 3.4GHz
Asus M4A87TD
Corsair Dominator 16GB DDR3 1600MHz
ATI HD5850 1GB
1x500GB Seagate, 1x1000GB Seagate
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Samsung Syncmaster SA350 x3

I have one monitor in the HDMI slot with a HDMI --> HDMI cable
I have one monitor in the DVI slot with a DVI --> HDMI cable
I have one monitor in the DP slot with a DP adaptor --> HDMI --> HDMI cable

Windows 7 shows 3 monitors in the display set up, but only 2 work at one time. One monitor is always "greyed out" and disconnected.
when i tried to save the settings, Windows says "Unable to save settings"

I checked the internet and every news/post i checked was old (2009/2010) and they say i need an active adaptor. I thought i had an active adaptor. I actually have 3 different DP adaptors and im guessing all are passive if none of them solve this problem. I currently live in China and every shop here has never heard of what i want, they all just show me what i guess are passive adaptors as they cost about £5 (8USD)

Does anyone have a work-around for this?

Many Thanks

Nips

You NEED an active DP-whatever adaptor, unless one of your displays has a DIsplayport connection. I'm sure you can order one from Europe. They're pretty expensive compared to passive adaptors, about $50-$80 USD.

Ok thanks

One more question: Would this setup work if i used a DP --> HDMI cable or is that the same as using a DP passive adaptor?

Post by Abram »

In your case, at least one display needs to be connected via active mini-DP to HDMI. The other can be connected with any mix of DVI/HDMI/passive mini-DP to HDMI.

Seeing as DP-equipped monitors are still in the minority, it' pretty lame that it took them until the third generation of Eyefintiy cards to include those active adapters.

So i have got my DP --> DVI

Post by nips_uk »

So i have got my DP --> DVI adaptor, took a while to locate and arrive. I plugged it in and found that the monitor isnt recognised (generic Non-pnp Monitor) and the max resolution is 1600x1200. Have i spent £45 on the wrong adaptor or am i missing something really easy?

Err... I recall others having that same issue, but not sure of the solution. It could be that the adapter is a single-link DVI, which (i think) cannot do 1920x1080 at more than 60hz refresh rate, so see if your display is running a refresh higher than 60hz.

What is the brand/specs/model of your adapter?

Post by nips_uk »

The brand/spec/model of my adaptor, i have no idea. Things in China are just made without copyright etc. I got mine specially made from the factory, but as Chinese people dont communicate, i have no idea where or how. The actual adaptor has no marking on it except "Active" on the DVI end.

I have checked my monitors and this is the setup: (without eyefinity)

DVI --> HDMI = HDMI 67.5kHz 60 Hz PP 1920x1080 (Black border around screen, Can not stretch to fit monitor)
HDMI --> HDMI = HDMI 67.5kHz 60 Hz PP 1920x1080 (Black border around screen, Can not stretch to fit monitor)
DP --> Adaptor --> HDMI = HDMI 75.0kHz 60 Hz PP 1600x1200 (how can i change the 75.0kHz to 67.5 kHz? Maybe thats the problem?)

With eyefinity:

3x1 (horz) = 4800x900

I have also noticed that when using eyefinity, on some games i get pink pixels that really stand up in red sections of colour and on other games, the DP adator monitor will flash pink. The whole screen will have a pink tinge. Some times flashes on and off, some times its fine for a few minutes. When not playing a game, the DP adaptor monitor will flash on and off as if its installing drivers of something.

When checking for new drivers, Windows 7 found that the DVI and HDMI cable monitors are Samsung SA350's, but Windows thinks the DP adaptor monitor is an Acer S271HL

Post by Abram »

A pink tinge? That's pretty weird. Sound like the problems with that adapter are stacking up. The joys of poor quality control, eh? Since it at least show a triple-wide image (even though it's pink and low-res, it does indeed, seem to be an active adapter
- just a poor one. It's not the first; when Eyefinity first came out, many people reports poorly-working active adapters.

I know there are a fair number of quality models that have been reported as working well here on on WSGF. But since I've never had the need for one, I'm not sure which ones they are, and I have no idea where you woudl order them on or near your area. Perhaps someone else can pipe in and tell you where you can order a quality Active Adapter from Europe.

Hopefully you can return the one you bought...

Thanks for your help, i came to the sae conclusion that its a cheap "made in China" version.

I found this on the amazon website:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-44000-02-40R-Active-Display-Cable/dp/B00433C5Y4

The comments seem positive, has any used/tried/got this?

Dont want to order it from the UK, wait for it to get here, then find out its another cheap one!

Post by Abram »

If you do a quick search of this site for that adapter, you'll find mostly positive results. The negative ones report occasional flicker, but that seems to be a problem with any adapter. I've even had my DP and mini-DP monitors flicker 3 or 4 times, on different video cards, but new drivers seemed to clear it up.

And looks like folks can run 5760x1200 with it, so you should be good to go!

Please, report back when you get it.

I didnt order that adaptor

Post by nips_uk »

I didnt order that adaptor from Amazon in the end. The shop that sold me the dodgy adaptor took it back and replaced it for free. It worked straight away out of the box and havent had a problem since. I do have a couple of questions though. Most games i try work fine, but Payday - The Heist has issues. The graphic options show 5760x1080, when i load the game, the left monitor is fine, but the centre and right monitors have a black border around the picture. When i play FSX it works, but everything is very zoomed in. Hopefully i can sovle these little niggles, but Dirt 3, OP:red River, Left 4 Dead 2, Battlefield 3 etc, Fantastic!!!

I have linked a few pictures if people have questions about EyeFinity and ATI HD5850 and Active Adaptors here:

www.quiba.co.uk/pc/index.html

Ill add more pics as i install, play and complete my games

Once again, thanks for all your support and help

That's awesome. If you click on Games up at the top of the site, you can find info on already-discovered fixes for most games, and ehck out Delphiums' HDU fix for Left 4 Dead.

Add me in BF3: CHUDD-BK- (Steam as well)

(and the rest of you, if you like)

The HD4890 definatly doesnt work with eyefinity? I have one with all the same output plugs as my HD5850, but I cant be bothered to move all my monitors into the living room for a test!
