Lobbying for Homeworld

As you may have heard, Gearbox Software purchased the Homeworld franchise IP from the new defunct THQ. In a news recent news post THQ outlined their plans to "preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games." They also state that they will make the games available on the "leading digital platforms". I'm guessing this means GOG and Steam.

THQ has invited gamers to visit the Gearbox Software Forums and let them know what you'd like to see done with the franchise. Based on our current research, widescreen support in Homeworld can be achieved by a Registry edit; both widescreen and multi-monitor support in Homeworld 2 are achieved by an .ini edit.

I've started a thread in the Gearbox Software Forums about native support for widescreen, multi-mon and 21:9. Please jump in and lend your support.

New User Badges in WSGF Forum

We are pleased to announce that we now have user badges (AMD Eyefinity, NVIDIA Surround, S-3D, 21:9, and more) in the WSGF forum, which you can assign to yourself. This has been a long time coming, and something that we've wanted since the last time we were on phpBB. Problem is that phpBB doesn't natively support this behavior.

Luckily our faithful admin Delphium has kicked phpBB in bollocks and made it do what we wanted (and what it should have done in the first place). Read on for more details and to see how to add your badges.

WSGF Interviewed by PCGW

Recently our friends at PC Gaming Wiki asked us if we would like to be interviewed. We were thrilled and honored, and jumped at the chance. You can read the whole thing here. Feel free to comment there, or here. And feel free to jump over to the Reddit post, so you can comment there.

AMD Releases Radeon HD 7990

Today AMD lifted the embargo on information regarding the Radeon HD 7990 launch. Unfortunately we weren't able to secure a review sample prior to the launch, but have been assured that we will receive one shortly.

The card is basically 2x Radeon HD 7970 GHz Editions smooshed into one package. The card is clocked at base 950Hz, with a boost of 1GHz. It boasts 6GB of VRAM and five outputs (4x Mini-DP + 1DL-DVI). The card was also designed to be virtually silent, and clocks in quieter than a library. The card also comes with seven high-profile AAA games in the box, which can help reduce the pain of its $999 price tag.

Included are slides from the press deck that AMD shares with us on their recent conference call. Click them to embiggen.

AMD Adds "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon" to Never Settle Reloaded Bundle

AMD recently announced that they have added Ubsisoft's upcoming title "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon" to their Never Settle Reloaded game bundle. The game will be offered for all GPUs offered in the existing bundle, from the HD 7970 all the way down to the HD 7770 GHz Edition.

They are also offered the title retroactively for anyone who has previously redeemed a Never Settle Reloaded code.

Contribute to the WSGF

I recently did an article on how you can add a game to the WSGF database. Beyond this, there area also additional areas where you can contribute. Two other areas are both easy and productive - the WSGF monitor database, and our screenshot/wallpaper galleries.

The following two YouTube videos outline the easiest methods by which you can contribute to the WSGF.

Tutorials on Adding a Game to the WSGF Database

Did you know that all of our content here is community generated and user editable? While it's true most of the content has been generated by a core group of folks, anyone who is a registered member (with a few posts under your belt) can add or edit. We'd really like to see more content generated by a larger audience, and we're doing what we can do help make that happen.

We've overhauled our games database form, making it easier to follow and use. I've also just put together this video series showing how to do a complete entry. The four-parts series runs a total of 45 minutes, though it doesn't take near as long to actually add a game to the database. I spent a lot of time going over how to gather information and prep, and also providing context and background for our grading.

Check out the YouTube playlist embedded below, and add/update games in your library to the WSGF. Gamers everywhere will thank you.

AMD Unveils Radeon HD 7990

I honestly didn't think we'd see a dual-GPU card from AMD in this generation, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. AMD unveiled the Radeon HD 7990 at GDC last night. The code named "Malta" card is 2x 7970 Tahiti TX2 GPUs merged together in a dual-slot form factor. It comes with 4x Mini-DP and 1x DL-DVI connections. The card was also used to demo the just announced Battlefield 4.

It will use 2x 8-pin connectors for external power, and expected to run north of 1GHz on each GCN core (boost speed). The card is expected to release soon, with AIB partners possibly offering custom solutions as well.
