Dell 21:9 Monitor Leaked - 29" LED IPS U2913WM

TechPowerUp has news of a leaked 21:9 panel from Dell. The post includes two pics (included here) of the monitor. The model is U2913WM. Breaking this model down we can deduce:

  • U - Ultra Sharp line (so IPS panel)
  • 29 - 29"
  • 13 - 13th series (same series as the 27" U2713HM)
  • W - Ultra WIDE (???)
  • H - LED backlight

This is the second 21:9 panel announced from a mainstream manufacturer, with LG recently announcing their 29" EA93. With these announcements, we can hopefully see 21:9 hit mainstream availability and acceptance.

At IFA 2012, LG up and announced, and then displayed a 29" LCD PC display with 21:9 aspect ratio. The display carries a resolution of 2560x1080, along with HDMI, DL-DVI, and DisplayPort connections. It also includes a USB 3.0 hub and 7W speakers.

Toshiba Announces 21:9 Ultrawide Ultrabook

At CES (the last two, actually), Vizio announced and showed off their 21:9 ultra-widescreen TVs sporting a native resolution of 2560x1080. Earlier this year they released the 58", with smaller sizes coming later this year. Toshiba has just announced a 14.4" ultrawide ultrabook, with a 1792x768 resolution screen. Unfortunately, what should have been the forte of the design may be a bit lackluster, due to usage of a TN panel. However, it's cool to see another ultrawide unit coming to market.

Digital Projection Debuts Ultra-Widescreen Projector

The dVision Scope 1080p is 2560 x 1080 out of the box, no anamorphic lens necessary. its custom firmware automatically detects and resizes when the letterbox black bars to fill the 1080p field by increasing the number of horizontal pixels.

A pair of these in Eyefinity would provide 5120x1080 total resolution (5.53MP), a 42:9 aspect ratio (4.667:1). This compares to "traditional" multi-monitor resolution of 5760x1080 (6.2MP), a 48:9 aspect ratio (5.333:1). This would provide for an aspect of almost a 3x1 setup, but with about 10% fewer pixels (faster performance) and no bezels.

Vizio announces 21:9 ultra-wide HDTVs w/ 2560x1080 resolution

A 21:9 display offers a 2.33:1 aspect, and is closer to to the "cinematic" movie aspect ratio of 2.78:1. This will result in lower black bars for movie watching. It also provides a wider aspect for gaming.

Even if you aren't a fan of multi-monitor gaming (Eyefinity & Surround), the work of the WSGF helps to ensure that games on these single ultra-wide monitors would be Hor+. It's aspect ratio is only slightly narrower than a 5x1-P Eyefinity setup of 2.8:1.
