Max & The Magic Marker

Platformer/physics puzzler for all ages. Help Max get through a dangerous paper and ink dreamworld by drawing bridgy-stairy objects or dropping squiggles to crush baddies and power swings. Cute, clever and cheap as only indies can be, apparently.

CES 2012 - Jan 9th Gaming News

Last year was a pretty good year for gamers. We got a look at the Razer Switchblade Prototype, Vizio announced its 3D 21:9 Cinemawide HDTVs, AMD launched the APU with the well received HP dm1z, and there were more new panels and notebooks than you could shake a stick at. Two years ago at CES 2010, Dell launched their first 27" panel - the U2711.

Since then the Switchblade has morphed into the Razer Blade (and the same technology showed up in their SW:TOR keyboard), the Vizio Cinemawide missed its anticipated fall 2011 launch, APUs continue to turn up everwhere, and HP has released its own 27" - the ZR2740w (it's actually an LED backed IPS monitor, and undercuts Dell's price by almost $300).

So, what will CES 2012 bring gamers? I'm hoping for an 27" LED IPS panel from Dell to heat up the price wars at the top end, and I really want the 21:9 Cinemawide to launch. It would also be nice to see some of the magic from the Razer products filter down into more affordable gear. And, there's always more panels than you can shake a stick at. So, here I'm collecting the announcements that I think will appear to the folks here at the WSGF.

An Unexpected Journey

Over the Christmas holidays it dawned on me that it had been exactly one year since we began the site migration to Drupal. Most everyone is aware that earlier this summer we made the transition from a phpBB/MediaWiki platform to Drupal. However, few people know about the unexpected journey we undertook. In thinking back on the last year, I quickly drew a parallel to the opening scenes from The Hobbit.

WSGF Launches Rep/Karma System

The WSGF has spent the last year planning and implementing our migration to Drupal. With the cross-over into 2012, we're at a point we were can start moving past migration, and begin building on the foundation we have laid. Two of the great things about Drupal are that: 1) it provides a consistent framework for the whole site (no more being split between phpBB, MediaWiki, etc), and 2) it's extensibility through plugin modules.

We're taking advantage of these two capabilities to launch a new Rep/Karma system across the entire site. This system will allow the site staff to easily find our most prolific users, and begin rewarding them appropriately. At the end of each quarter, I will look at the points list and see who is at the top of the list. The top Non-Insiders (assuming they have a high points count) will receive a game from their Steam wishlist (or some similar reward). Users who consistently hit the top of the list will be considered for Insider status. You can see the current standings with the "Users by points" link in the left nav, under your user menu.

Garry's Mod

Although Garry's Mod is usually considered to be a full game, it has no game objective and players can use the game's set of tools for any purpose. Garry's Mod allows players to manipulate "props" – various objects that players can place in-game. Props can be selected from any installed Source engine game or from a community created collection. The game features two "guns" – Physics Gun and Tool Gun for manipulating objects. The Physics Gun allows objects to be picked up, adjusted and frozen in place.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Black Ops is a first-person shooter, retaining the same gameplay mechanics as previous Call of Duty titles. The player assumes the role of a foot soldier who can wield various firearms (only two of which can be carried at once), throw grenades and other explosives, and use other equipment as weapons. A player close enough to an enemy can kill with one knife blow. A character can take three stances: standing, crouching or prone. Each affects rate of movement, accuracy, and stealth.
