S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is a first-person shooter video game by the Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, published in 2007. It features an alternate reality theme, where a second nuclear disaster occurs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Exclusion Zone in the near future and causes strange changes in the area around it. The game has a non-linear storyline and features gameplay elements such as trading and two-way communication with NPCs. The game includes elements of role-playing and business simulation games.

The background and some terminology of the game ("The Zone", "Stalker") is borrowed from the popular science fiction novella Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky and the 1979 Andrei Tarkovsky film Stalker that was loosely based on it, as well as Stalker, the film's subsequent novelization by the original authors. The term "Stalkers" was originally used for the scientists and engineers who explored the interior of Chernobyl's "sarcophagus" after its hasty construction in 1986.

In S.T.A.L.K.E.R, the player assumes the identity of an amnesiac "Stalker", an illegal explorer/artifact scavenger in "The Zone", named "The Marked One". "The Zone" is the location of an alternate reality version of the Zone of alienation surrounding the Chernobyl Power Plant after a second, fictitious meltdown, which further contaminated the surrounding area with radiation and caused strange otherworldly changes in local fauna, flora and the laws of physics. "Stalker" in the context of the film refers to the older meaning of the word as a tracker and hunter of game or guide.

Solutions & Issues
Widescreen Solution & Issues:

Racer_S released a FOV/AR tool, see Attachment below.

This hack by MacroN gives you the ability to increase field of view in the three retail releases (S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC/CS/CoP): FOV switcher

Eyefinity / Surround Specific Solution & Issues:

Firstly go to ... C:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl ... (or whever you installed the game)
Make a backup of the file ... fsgame.ltx ... just in case you need to put things back as default.
Now ... open the file ... fsgame.ltx ... with WordPad or NotePad ...

Change the line ...

$game_data$ = false| false| $fs_root$| gamedata\

To ...

$game_data$ = true| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\

And save.

Now download the Text Fix below

Copy the folder called ... gamedata ... from the RAR file to ... C:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl

That is it ...

To uninstall this ... just remove the folder called ... "gamedata" from ... C:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl

I also didn't like the size of the crosshair ... it was too big in TripleHead ... so I made a smaller one ...

Will only work if you have made the change to the ... fsgame.ltx ... as described above in the post above.

Download the Crosshair Fix below

Copy the ... system.ltx ... file from the RAR and put it here ... C:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl\gamedata\config

I've also modified the HUD to suit TripleHead better ...
It's not perfect but it is a darn sight better than having it all stretched on the side screens ...

I had to remove the box around the weapons because I couldn't find a way to stop the weapon/ammo icons from stretching.
Because of this stretching I also moved them so they appear on the right hand screen ... just to the right of the bezel.
Which enabled me to move the health and armour indicators down to the bottom.

Also ...
The status icons (such as eat/radiation/bleeding etc.) that appear on the right screen are still on the right screen.
This is because I can't find a way to move the icons to the centre screen.

And the PDA popup and its info are still on the left screen.
This is because I can't find a way to move all of it so I felt it was best left where it was.

To install ...
Download the HUD fix below

Assuming you already have the TH Text Fix ...
Copy the contents of the ... ui ... folder from the .rar into the ...
C:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl\gamedata\config\ui ... folder.

That's it ... enjoy ...

=====

The HUD items appear stretched but remain completely legible even at 3840x1024.
Some surround / eyefinity game anomalies :
1. When standing next to a wall you can often see through pieces of it, i.e. your FOV extends into the wall. This is the worst anomaly, it effects the visual aspects of the game often.
2. The written script of conversations cuts off some words. I surmise it is sentences that take up more length than 1280 pixels. This is annoying but as the sentences are also spoken it is not a game-breaker.
