Widescreen Solution & Issues:

Supported resolutions are 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768.

The Rise of Rome expansion/ gold edition can be patched for widescreen support with UPatch HD but this does not patch the base game. Supports up to 1920x1200 by default. Custom (and higher) resolutions are possible but untested.
