Rome: Total War (often abbreviated to RTW or Rome) is a PC strategy game developed by The Creative Assembly and released on 22 September, 2004 by Activision. The game is the third title in The Creative Assembly's Total War series.
The game's main campaign is set during the rule of the late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire (270 BC – AD 14), with the player assuming control of one of three Roman families; other factions are playable outside the main campaign. Gameplay consists of real-time tactical battles framed within a turn-based strategic campaign, taking place across Europe, North Africa and the Near East. On the large strategic scale, players spend each turn managing diplomacy, developing infrastructure, moving armies, and managing the population's growth and orderliness through taxes and gladiatorial games, among other tasks.
On the smaller scale, real time battles against enemy armies take place within or between cities, with the player ordering units usually numbering thousands of individual soldiers.

Solutions & Issues
Ideally...
Select your Strategy Map & Battle Map resolutions from the Video options. Check 'Show advanced options' then check the Widescreen box.
However...
Chances are the game won't detect your desired resolution right away, so it's safer to make changes directly in C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\preferences\preferences.txt
1) Edit all ***_RESOLUTION and ***_MAX_RESOLUTION values to your desired res, e.g for 1920x1080:
STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
STRATEGY_MAX_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
BATTLE_MAX_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
From now on you should be able to select any resolution and adjust in-game options to your liking normally, but while you're here...
2) Activate "Widescreen" mode:
USE_WIDESCREEN:TRUE
This is merely a "16:9 toggle" though. It only affects the 3D world, the UI is unchanged.
You might notice there is a FOV value in there:
CAMERA_FOV:75.000000
Unfortunately it's only the vertical FOV of the battle cam. Increasing it will "dolly out" the view, but not affect the stretching. Leave at default value.
