Vert-.. pretty cheesy but not too surprising considering it started on x360. Still, i had hoped that the apperent overhaul would've resolved the issues..

thanks for getting this report out so fast.

EDIT: I thought I'd poke around the config files, but found little mention of a FOV settings, and most of those are for weapon and camera settings. I guess we'll have to wait for an official patch or maybe one of you lovely WSGF members can come up with something. Or see something that I did not.

I also registered at teh Bioware forums to make a post about this and sadly, only users that have registered their game can post in the forums. I never buy games unless they have hor+. Maybe another user can get the ball rolling.

Damn it. I actually sent Chris Priestly a message some months ago begging them to implement Hor+ or at least make it possible to change the FOV manually. He kindly replied that my request has been forwarded to the dev team. :)

I just found this on the official Mass Effect forum:

"Go to My Documents/Bioware (where save games and stuff are)

go into Config files

Open BioImput ini file with Notepad
locate the section [Engine.Console] and beneath it enter the line ConsoleKey=Tilde and then hit return so there is an extra space in between sections.

In game press ~ to bring up console."

So, a console, yay! Now could someone be kind enough to start digging for a command to change the FOV? ;) I won't be getting mah Mass Effect on until June 6th so I can't do it myself.

They don't have the game yet.

However I do. I feel like blaming someone so I might as well blame myself.

Default fov is 80.

The zoom level looks the same although I will not know until I do compariosn pics.

Does someone have a save game with the sniper rifle? I can update the DR today if you can get it to me.

Changing FOV breaks the sniper rifle zoom. You get the scope view but the FOV barely changes. Zoom stepping is also broken. Please steal my screens. (FOV at 90)

Please steal my screens.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I personally cannot endorse this as an official solution.

Changing the fov via console breaks the fov usage for anything anamorphic. Which is all the dialog and cut-scenes. It is not just that everything is zoomed out but any change in the fov during the cutscene is overridden as well. :(

I will let the powers decide if they want to use this as the official soultion.

These shots can be compared directly to the cut-scene section in the report above.

I take it that sniper zoom is an important gameplay element? If so, then there's probably not much point in making our official solution a hor + one that breaks sniper zoom.

The sniper rifle zoom in is important only as far as you use a sniper rifle for your character.
But even if you don't, I don't see how it could be accepted as a good solution.
Better than nothing of course.

Pretty important considering one of the classes uses snipers quite often (at least, I did. So awesome).

Based on info presented in this thread, the XBox360 version has the same FOV at 16:9 as the PC version, and at 4:3 it's letterboxed (anamorphic). This is, apart from actually having worked on the game, as close to conclusive evidence as we can get that the game was developed for 16:9 screens and it's FOV was chosen for the aspect since 16:9 is the only way you can experience the game on that platform.

It appears that the development studio that ported the game to PC (Demiurge Studios) decided to open up the visible space for taller aspects rather than keeping the game anamorphic (apart from the conversations). E.g. this definitely is a case of vert+ for taller screens as opposed to vert- for wider screens.

You can be confident that playing on a 16:9 screen you're seeing the amount of visible space the developer intended at the FOV that was specifically chosen by the developer. Changing the FOV for widescreens in this case would constitute and actual change from the intended visible space for the game and is not a matter of enforcing correct widescreen behavior as it is in most other vert- games which were developed for 4:3 and not 16:9.

Because the thread above is comparing a 4:3 letterboxed Youtube clip with a 16:10 resolution I have taken it upon myself to strengthen the evidence.

No need to thank me.

Please please. I need no thanks. Your undying fem/bro-love is all I need.

On a serious note, If someone is actually interested in comparing 360 shots and not crappy Youtube action clips and you have video capture capabilities please do the following...

1. Start a new game.

2. Don't touch the controller when the game is playable.

3. Take a pic when you get to the screen where you first have control of your character on the ship.

OR

4. Take a pic when you land on the first planet with your team.

5. If possible get a 16:9 and 4:3 360 pic. So, one fullscreen 16:9, and the letterboxed 4:3.

I prefer pic #4 because it is easier to contrast the differences in the characters.

If you do not have video capture but want to try a shot of pic #4 dig cam style you are more than welcome to try. But it may just look like crap.

Anyone want to see if adding the console and tweaking the FOV works:

We already did. It breaks the zoom and cutscenes.

I don't recognize this engine...so unfortunately I will be of little help.

I don't think the sniper rifle is really highly used...at least not for me...yet...
