G-sync or no sync?

Post by Lawnmower2 »

Took delivery today of a Gigabyte GT980X Ti and have also purchased a Samsung 34" Curved Monitor S34E970C which is neither g-sync nor freesync.

I purchased both before discovering this Forum.

I am retired, not an overclocker, and use my PC for enjoyment and non-competitive gaming. After gaming for over 20 years I thought it was time I treated myself to a bit more immersive experience via the widescreen. I prefer RPG's Mass Effect, Dead Space, Deus Ex, Half Life, Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Fear... etc. and also am trying to get to grips with DCS flight simulations.

Having browsed some of this huge Forum, my slight concern is whether I acted in ignorant or over-enthusiastic haste re the monitor and would be better advised to return the Samsung and perhaps consider another similar sized monitor which is g-sync.

Would I really benefit one-way or the other?

If the answer is yes- any alternative suggestions? Acer Predator X34 is one I saw mentioned recently in another thread.

I know I may have to tweak the Samsung out of the box but I'm game to try it if the result is worth it - and others seem to like the monitor, but that niggling g-sync doubt keeps creeping into the back of my mind.

Advice is much appreciated.

Hi and :welcome

I would return the Samsung and go with variable refresh rate monitor (g-sync in your case). I found it always annoying to try to run single player games at a 60fps minimum and not take full advantage of my gpu (since it would't run at 99% usage), so I could have a smooth experience. With variable refresh you have the best of both worlds: max frame-rate and smooth gameplay. Either the Acer Predator X34 or the
Asus PG348Q would be a good choice.

I've had my 980 ti since November and I recently upgraded from a 27" Ultrasharp 2560x1440 Dell IPS without G-sync to the Acer Predator x34 3440x1440 and the difference with and without G-Sync is phenomenal. I would recommend 10 out of 10 times getting G-Sync :twothumb: monitor if it's affordable. Now this Dell does a excellent job as my secondary running 1440x2560 in portrait.

Thankyou, Violation.

Photo looks exciting. Is someone or something lugging some pretty impressive weaponry around?

Graphcs card I'm switching from is an AMD Radeon so assume I should get rid of Catalyst Control Centre before installing the 980ti.

I'm getting all excited about this switch to widescreen. Delighted I found this Forum.

Make sure you use DDU after uninstalling AMD software to completely remove the Radeon drivers. This way it is very unlikely that you will have driver conflicts. DDU has a option for installing a new gpu which you can use.

I guess that would be the Clean and Shut Down option.

I'm sure it's a lot easier than it seems. Is the procedure actually spelled out somewhere?

At what point do I switch cards and/or download the new Nvidia driver?

Maybe I just run DDU and follow instructions?

step 1: uninstall al amd gpu related software and drivers true Programs and Features in Windows and restart
step 2: run DDU and it will ask you to restart in safe mode, do so
step 3: you are now in safe mode, run DDU(will run automatically I believe) and select Clean and Shutdown
step 4: when power is off, turn of the psu to be save and swap gpu's
step 5: turn pc on and install nvidia driver

Quick updatte. Taken advice, returned Samsung and expect delivery today of Acer Predator X34 G-sync version 2

Will try and follow DDU instructions and see what happens. Does it matter whether I change monitor before or after installing Graphics card. And do I take all the options offered through Nvidia- - 3D, Physics, Ge-Force Experience- etc.. Presume can tidy up the installed Nvidia programs later if necessary.

It does not.

Normally I install only the driver, the control panel and physx, but it depends on your personal needs.

Thanks. May get it done tomorrow.

Can't wait to get back into Witcher3 -Hearts of Stone. -Just glanced at it quickly and since I was last in Witcher a month or so ago the Control options seem to have been broadened re graphics and Hud etc but I may just have not noticed before. Going down for supper now. Appreciate your help. Thankyou. Off for a break and a Johnnie Walker.

Just discovered my PSU is incompatible with the 980ti and I have to get a new PSU. Thought I checked the compatibility but there was a subsequent version of my PSU that was compatible and I must have hit that one by mistake when checking. Ah well. Patience is a virtue- delivery in early May - the new unit (EVGA Supernova GT 650 Gold Modular) is in demand apparently.

What makes your old psu incompatible?

I don't have two 8-pin plugs. The version that followed mine does but I have the original edition , which unfortunately only had one 8 pin.

I believe there are 2x 6 pin to 8 pin adapters witch you can use, assuming you psu supports 8 pin + 2x 6pin. Also I would recommend a minimum of 500W. If your current psu is a lesser known/low quality model, then I would replace it anyway.

Thankyou. Noted, and replacement is my best option. Will check back once I get it all set up.
