Samsung & LG to show 105" UHD 21:9 TVs at CES 2014

Post by skipclarke »

Based on two reports from Engadget, both LG and Samsung are poised to showcase 105" Ultra HD TVs sporting a 21:9 "ultra widescreen" aspect ratio. Both displays are curved, and sport a resolution of 5,120 x 2,160 - a total of 11.06M pixels.

By comparison a "4K UHD" display has 8.29M pixels, making these sets basically 5.3K UHD". By way of comparison, a 5x1-Portrait Eyefinity configuration has 10.4M pixels, and an aspect ratio of 25.3:9 - just wider than the 21:9 aspect ratio here. Recently announced 3440x1440 21:9 displays have 4.93M pixels (roughly 2.5 HD), and just under half the pixels of these new massive panels.

If you've got the money for one of these new displays, you can compare performance to any 5x1-Portrait Eyefinity benchmarks out there. Until this resolution makes its eventual way to PC displays, you can keep on the lookout for the 34" 3440x1440 panels which will require half the horsepower.

Finally, a replacement for my 5x1P! Let me just pull out my credit card....

On a serious note, though, this has me super excited. I've been waiting for a 4K 21:9 display. Now that one exists, hopefully we'll see them in more reasonably sized packages in the next couple of years. Unfortunately, we still don't have a cable standard with the correct throughput. The latest iteration of HDMI can only handle 4K at 16:9 at standard refresh rates, so we'll need another bandwidth bump to push that number of pixels. Especially at 120Hz.

Nice.

Now in 120hz and i'd buy one. Okay... if it were less than 2k maybe.
But sadly 60hz 5120x2160 already needs 15.93Gbit/s Would work via DP 1.2
We gonna send it to outa space!

Although probably obvious, to be clear the comparison "5x1P" used is 5x 1080p. 5x1P using 1440p monitors would be 18.4 mega pixels. Also 4k can mean 3840x2160 (and usually does) as well as 4096x2160 and I believe even a few others. While largely correct (and kudos for the article) there's quite a bit of ambiguity in the comparisons.
