2012 WSGF Award nominations

Post by AussieTimmeh »

Hi all, it's a new year and we get to look back on 2012 and decide which games were our favorite for widescreen and multi-mon play, and which were the most frustrating!

There were some pretty major games out this year, check out the full list of 2012 releases for games that we have Detailed Reports on here: http://www.wsgf.org/mgl/releases/2012

You can check out the 2011 awards here: http://www.wsgf.org/article/2011-wsgf-awards

So we've got a few awards to nominate for!

Mainstream Developer of the Year - last year, Codemasters took this out for their continual support of multimon setups with their racing series. However, they seemed to have dropped the ball this year with F1 Racestars. Which mainstream developer deserves a mention this year?

Indie Developer of the Year - Mojang took this out last year, showing that a small developer can still put out a game that supports widescreen and multimon despite having limited resources with their hit game Minecraft.

Game of the Year - DiRT3 won the voting for this game, handing Codemasters 2 awards in the one year. Which game do you think is worthy of nomination for the voting this year? It must support both widescreen and multimon perfectly (A grade for both) to be considered - we don't award 'almost'.

Finally, we have the Narrow-Minded Award. Bethesda won this with their continual breaking of Skyrim, which kept our coders constantly busy trying to release new patches so we could all play in multi-monitor goodness. Who has frustrated you this year with their continual contempt for our community?

Cast your nominations into the rink and we'll assess them for suitability to go to vote! This is your say, your turn to award the developers who have treated you right (or wrong, depending on which award you want to give them!).

To make things a little easier, here are the eligible (for GOTY) games from the DR list:

Hitman Absolution
Mechwarrior Online
F1-2012
Torchlight II
Sleeping Dogs
Symphony
MDK2-HD
Tera - The Exiled Realm of Arborea
Sniper Elite V2
Wargame: European Escalation
Alan Wake
Dear Esther
Jagged Alliance: Back In Action

Not sure how I'm going to vote since I haven't played a single one of these titles.

GA's list are the games that have been 'gold certified' this year and as such are eligible for the Game of the Year award. Doesn't affect the other awards :) (In fact you want the opposite for the narrow minded award! ;) )

Even though I own most of these games, I've just had no time to play them, so I'm not sure what to go for. Codemasters just went silent on the Dirt:Showdown FOV problem, so not them and I'd be biased against giving it to F1 2012 because of that. While Sleeping Dogs was pretty damn good - the support and the game - it wasn't perfect so if there were any other games on that list that were absolutely spot on maybe it should go to them. Really I'm unsure.

I realise I've been no help at all. You're welcome.

I believe other games can be added to the list if they receive a DR and are qualified. Unfortunately the WSGF doesn't get review copies of every game, so our list won't be exhaustive.

Thanks for the tip. :onethumb:

I've edited my previous post to clarify the list.

Are there any major releases from 2012 that we don't have a DR for? We chatted about it on IRC. I did DRs for FTL and Miami Hotline yesterday.

I'll nominate Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for the narrow-minded award. To be fair, the developers were very open about the expected poor quality of the port and we all knew what we were getting in to. But, I still think the internal frame buffer being set at 1024x720 was absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that a higher resolution internal frame buffer was never patched in - even after Durante demonstrated what a simple fix it could be.

Need for Speed Most Wanted (2)
Risen 2 - Dark Waters
Shogun 2 - Fall of the samurai

Planetside 2 is out of Beta and released yet?

Ghost Recon doesn't support MM so it's out.
Someone has asked Hayden if he could look at The Secret World, so that won't be eligible.
I found a post that says NFS has isues in MM, so rule that out too.
Helifax has posted about fixing Risen 2, so it's out.

Not sure about Shogun 2, only found a thread where someone was having monitor issues with it. It appeared to run center-screen only, but the poster was having other issues so who knows.

I'll start putting together the Developer's for and against for voting this week.

Thanks for the nomination, Bifurk8!

Missed this at the bottom there. It is released, and there is no DR. It's free-to-play so I can DR that. However, it has vehicle FOV issues so it's not a contender.

Just doing the developer cases and noticed that MechWarrior Online is still in Beta and in development, so it's out of the running for 2012 voting also. It will be available for voting in the year that it is officially released (assuming 2013 but Minecraft proved you never know).

Why Is Max Payne 2 not nominated? Perfect Surround ..even perfect 3D Surround even.. It doesn't work for Eyefinity?

I assume you mean Max Payne 3, and it is because 16:10 is a stretched version of 16:9 so it does not get gold certification in widescreen. Probably one of the only games where it scores higher in multimon than widescreen.
