Much point to multi screen gaming?

Post by Massivedance »

I love triple screen gaming, but the support you get from the game dev's just seems almost non-existent.

For the most part ive only played Battlefield BC2, 3, and Planetside 2 while ive had my triple screen setup.
BC2 was ok, but not supported fully.
BF3 wasnt exactly supported properly.
PS2 there is basically no support.

Im getting a mortgage next October so i can move out of my bedroom and into my own place. For the living room ive been planning to get a setup with 3x 42" TV's with an nvidia 790 GTX or whatever its name is going to be in 2013.
But now i come to think about it even more, is it even worth getting a sweet triple screen setup?

Some weeks ago when a friend was here in my room, when we were talking about when i get my own place he said something along the lines of as if id be better off or more impressed being able to have something like a 50"+ TV instead of these 3x 27" monitors... i instantly thought to myelf - "hu? i thought he thought this was a really awesome setup, i guess not then?" To me this setup is better than having a single 84" TV. And i was thinking about getting 3x 42"s to really step up the impressive factor.

People just dont seem to understand the benefit of having 3 screens. No matter how much you tell them its like they are dumb or something, they still some how seem to think that a bigger screen is better than 3 screens.

So now im not sure what to go for;
a 50"+ TV with a 780 GTX, cost maybe £2000
a projector with a 780 GTX, cost the same as above but more in the long run due to replacement lamps
3x 42" TV's with a 790 GTX, cost maybe £3000

Its just that, when i have new visitors, they see such a huge setup of 3x 42" TV's side by side, they'll be like either:
1) wow amazing! wet thy pants.
2) i suppose he dont get out much.
3) nice, will tell someone about this place to come round when he isnt in to rob the place.

Might as well go back to using a single screen?

I think most of us, myself certainly, prefer triple-wide for the extra field of view. Someone who's not in the scene may take a look at your triple-wide setup and think, "WTF, why don't they just get one big screen?" without realizing the difference between what's being displayed on a 50" TV at 1920x1080 versus three 24" monitors at 5760x1080. And, to some folks, the difference doesn't matter. Not everybody cares about getting extra peripheral vision and the immersion that goes along with it. I hardly ever game without it, now. How about you?

Edit: You mentioned BC2 and BF3 as games you've been playing in triple-wide. They're nearly perfect examples of hor+ triple-wide support. The only thing they could do better is have three separate cameras for each of your three separate screens to prevent stretching or the fisheye effect. Honestly, that would be great, but the only game I have that supports individual cameras for each screen is iRacing. If you're looking for flawless triple-wide support like that, I don't think you'll be likely to find it in most games. We're still far too niche for most developers to put in that kind of extra work.

But, both Eyefinity and NV Surround have greatly increased triple-wide adoption. Hopefully it will continue!

Dude, screw what everyone else thinks. You and I both know just how awesome surround gaming really is. Not a single person that I've showed it to appreciates it. They all say that same stuff about a big tv and dont listen when I talk fov and resolution. Even my best friends don't get it. I just laugh it off as they are simpletons. Triple screen gaming is for us elite pc gamers that want that immersive experience.

the fish eye effect only happens when your monitors are lay flat in front of you

if your 3 monitors wraps around you, then you are immersed and there's no fish eye effect feeling, as things will look naturally from the corner of your eyes

it gets even better when you enable 3D surround view, it's like you are actually in there

i use 3 42 inch screens for my gamerig, I also have the htpc going through a 1080p projector so i have both for comparison.
The big screen is great for lounging on the couch with the consoles or arcade games, but it cant compare to the triple screen setup for fpshooters, racing etc. Playing games like x byond the frontier etc is so much better in multi screen.

Stick with it
intel x79
2 way 780ti's under water
Intel 4760 extreme @ 4GHz
3 x 42 inch screens @5860x1080
16 gigs xmp ram @2200
