WINDOWS 8

Post by Widerron »

How do you configure windows 8 to work with Nvidia 3D Surround?
Right now I can not get the charm bar to come up which severely limits me.
I'm using the latest 64 bit Win 8 nvidia drivers and dual gtx 480's.
In desktop mode, I have it configured to Span all 3 displays with Surround.

Partial answer

I got the charms bar to work by using the Win 7 295.73 driver instead of the 296.17 win 8 driver.
But still, how do you get Apps to open to only one screen instead of spanning across all three screens?
When or if I figure that out, I will post a reply to that as well.

Win 8 modes

Post by Widerron »

Ok, Win + P will give available modes. Clicking on Extend will give you one screen of Metro UI and one screen of desktop mode. But the rightmost screen goes black.
My conclusion is that there is no 3 monitor support for 3D Surround yet. I would like to eventually be able to use the Win arrow keys to move Apps around from one window to another while in Spanned Nvidia 3D Surround mode.

What little time I had to

What little time I had to play with Windows 8 in a proper install, rather than Virtual Machine, left me less than impressed.

The beta drivers (302.something?) for Win 8 may improve things, if you haven't tried them already?

Not sure how it works with surround but it works perfectly with eyefinity. I couldn't live with myself if my taskbar didn't stretch across all 3 screens but luckily it does.

NVSurround should work in

Post by Oraijon »

NVSurround should work in Windows 8 afaik. My friend runs Windows 8 on 2x 670 sli for a few weeks now.
I believe it works for him with all recent driver updates since 301.42 (hasnt tried earlier versions). Only thing he runs into is that he cant center the taskbar on one screen and cant maximize on one screen.

Hello,

I am using Windows 8 with NV Surround. I've tried 306.97 and 310.33 BETA. Both drivers work fine. Getting good Surround performance with the new operating system. As already mentioned, I hope the nvidia feature to center the taskbar returns in future driver updates.

Windows 8 works fine. I have posted in a couple of other questions that it requires a change in thinking about how to use. Most people were frustrated with Windows 7 multi screen support for the following reasons:

1. Taskbar was on primary screen only
2. While playing games secondary monitors when blank
3. Start menu was limited top or bottom with multiple screens.

Here came Nvidia Surround... It fixed some of these issues as it made 3 screens basically 1 large screen but was still limited by Windows 7.

1. Hack to enable taskbar on middle otherwise only Left or Right viable
2. Opening windows required positioning and scretching as clicking maximize would span all screens.

Now we have Windows 8. It fixes all of these problem in my opinion.

1. You have multiple options for where your taskbar is located and what is displays.
a. you can specify what monitor the primary task bar is located.
b. you specify when the taskbar appears... Only when app running on specific screen, All the time with own set of quick launch shortcuts, or mirror all taskbar the same
c. you move the taskbar up, left, right, or bottom on each screen independent of the other screens. Taskbar on the left for left monitor, top for middle monitor, and bottom for right monitor. All your choice.
2. During game play if the game does not support Nvidia Surround, you can run the game on the primary monitor and still see your secondary monitors. Albiet you cannot interact while playing the game.. BUT Alt-Tab out and you can no interact do what you need and ALT - TAB back to your game.
3. Switching to Nvidia Surround for games take 15 seconds, play the game, get done and exit, and another 10 seconds to return your displays to normal operation.
4. Open an app on any screen and just maximize to get full screen for that monitor. No more dragging and resizing.

I personally on a regular basis watch Netflix on Left Monitor, been playing XCOM lately on the center monitor, and have Mail/IM on right monitor. No issues.

So in my opinion, windows 8 is the besting thing that has happened to multi-screen systems since Nvidia Surround. You can have the best of both worlds.

Later....
