Rage with 7970
Rage with 7970
Hey people, is anyone able to give advice on playing Rage with an ATI 7970. I've just downloaded and the game looks good, graphically the textures are nice etc, but it thrashes the hell out of my CPU. There is a GPU transcoding option but it's NVIDIA only. Is there a work around for the 7970?
I've also seen about adding jobsteams = 0 or something to my steam launcher. This is ok, but the textures take a while to load. So you have basic textures to start with, and the good ones gradually load up if you wait.
Any other hints?

Rage doesn't have an included
Rage doesn't have an included Benchmark does it?
Could you tell me what settings which Level and what FPS?
I wonder whats the difference between 870 and 3930K @4GHZ

We gonna send it to outa space!
With everything set to full
With everything set to full I'm getting around 11 fps. It seems worse with Fraps running tho. Without Fraps it seems smoother.
Which card are you running? I'm wondering if the GTX680 runs much better due to the Cuda cores and therefore GPU Transcoding. If so, is it worth selling the 7970 and getting the GTX 680? I'm guessing other games will see benefits such as Tesselation, cuda and physx boosts.

FRAPS should have an impact
FRAPS should have an impact on performance, but that is just because it needs resources to do what it does. Have you opened Overdrive on the card and checked to see if the 3D clock is properly set at 925 MHz?

yes, my card is overclocked
yes, my card is overclocked already so thats fine. It's the CPU thrashing that seems to be killing me more than the GPU.

I'm with a 590 Nvidia,
I'm with a 590 Nvidia, 5760x1080 resolution, 301.24 drivers, and the fps results are quite poor. The main problem seems to be the texture cache, because when I reduce it to LOW, fps does improve. But not having HIGH texture cache in a game like RAGE is big deal.
Do I need to be doing something in the settings, outside the game, or in the Nivida Control Panel? People running the game with 3-moniters on Youtube are having fantastic fps, so I seem to be doing something wrong.
Oh and BTW, Hayden's new fix works like a charm. :)

The most demanding option
The most demanding option seems to be "Texture DETAIL" (not "Texture Cache") in the video-options.
If you have performance problems I would recommend disabeling that feature.
Basically "Texture Detail" is an upscaling-filter for the blurry upclose-textures in rage.
Problem is that it seems to be processed by the CPU and not the GPU which is why its so heavy on the processcor.
I dont know if CUDA on NV-hardware makes a difference here.
However "Texture CACHE" should be turned to "high" because it eliminates the otherwise visable texture-streaming.
I am running rage in 5760 * 1080 with one HD7970 (CPU is an older i7-860).
It runs smooth without "Texture Detail" but is unplayable with it turned on.

Thanks! Turning off Texture
Thanks! Turning off Texture Detail fixed all the FPS issues. Do you know the difference with or without it? I can't seem to tell.
