Should I cancel my BF3 preorder until better GPUs come out?
This is a crazy gaming season, and I barely have time for the games I do have. For whatever reason, I decided to preorder BF3 too. But it seems like my trusty ol 5870s isnt going to cut it at 57x12 resolutions, and I don't have a second slot for Xfire/SLI either. Should I just wait till the 7000s come out at this point? Seems like they should be out soon.

Hmm... it's hard to say if you should upgrade or not. I was able to run a 5850 in 5040x1050 in Bad Company 2 with okay framerate, but I had to cut back on a lot of the effects. That was until I had to cut back on almost everything because of the frequent crashing I get from heavy rendering. By the time they actually fixed that, I was already on dual 6950.
I wish I could give you a suggestion on the matter. I did a system upgrade from a Core2 Q9450 to a i7 2600k and went with dual-cards right from the start. If I was struggling for extra cash for upgrades, I would have stuck with the single card to the very end. But I would not cancel any preorder for any games. I would check it out to see how well it performs, see what tweaks I can apply, and determine what is a good compromise to get that framerate up.

lol damn, I didn't realize it came out today. Too late.
Are you nuts?! Dont cancel
Are you nuts?! Dont cancel your preorder. The game will still look good, as it did when I was running one 5870 in Eyefinity.
That was in the alpha, I installed a second 5870 right before the beta arrived and it looked even better but definitely not worth not playing.
Do yourself a favor bud and hang on to that bf3 :D
Dont give up!

Hello Hanmat,
The game works perfectly in crossfire mode. I actually had to remove the profiles I downloaded specifically for BF3 because the game was stuterring every 2 seconds. Now everything is up on ULTRA settings but with no AA.
No complaints here.
thanks

What's your gaming res on your dual 5870? I run mine on medium on majority of the settings due to Grand Bazaar taking a massive hit on framerate.
I have Nvidia 480 in SLi and
I have Nvidia 480 in SLi and get terrible frames . approx 30-50 :(
Can you explain what profiles are ?

Hello Hanmat,
Profiles are ATI Catalyst Application Profiles, or CAP. Specific settings for games to improve crossfire performance.
Heres an example of the latest update:
New profiles added to this release:
- Battlefield 3 – Provides great CrossFire scaling and resolves stuttering issues when running in CrossFire mode
- Deus Ex Missing Link: Improves CrossFire performance
- F1 2011: Improves CrossFire performance
- Dead Island: Improves CrossFire performance
- Batman Arkham City (DX9 version): Improves CrossFire performance
- NBA 2012: Disables CrossFire
More info: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/pages/crossfirex-app-profiles.aspx
Unfortunately, this is ATI only :(
Sorry mate

Actually I did end up
Actually I did end up canceling because of time. I don't have any. School is ramping up, as is my job, and I have no time for a battlefield game. Hopefully the 7000 series will be out when I get a break. It does look gorgeous from SS.
OT and thread hijack,
OT and thread hijack, sorry!
I didn't know they released CAP4. I'll give that a try to see if there's any performance improvements.
