5870, 6950 or 6970?

Post by wadec22 »

So I'm really torn! I game at 4080x768. I went from a 5870 to a dual 5850 setup and I do not care for it. A lot of personal preference but slight input lag in multiplayer gaming, fan noise, etc... Anyway I mostly just play Battlefield Bad Company 2 right now. I will probably play the new Witcher and Crysis games when they come out.

Should I grab another 5870 (i can get a used one for 190.00), a 6950 or a 6970?

I would say having crossfire would cause POTENTIALLY more problems than having 1 card *more power, more noise, more heat* although I would guess at your resolution you wouldn't get the full benefit anyway.

I would say it is a safer bet to go with a 6950, I don't really think the extra FPS the 70 card or crossfire would bring to the table would amount to much of a increase in performance. If you get the microstutter problem with Xfire 5870 believe me, you will not want to use Xfire again.

i have both a 5870 and 6970 and have used them both in eyefinity.

honestly, i am scratching my head abit at the lack of performance increase. i think the one thing you can do successfully is enable 2xAA with the 2gb 6970.

Battlefield BC2 looks PHENOMENAL in portrait eyefinity with 2AA running. On my other card, I had to drop AA to get it smooth.

I would NOT go the crossfire route with the older cards though for eyefinity. They don't seem to scale and have other issues.
