Is the PSP still alive?

Post by Tanuki »

Did Nintendo kill another handheld? The current retail scene for the PSP reminds me of the Gamecube.

Oh, and Dragon Quest IX is the stuff.

Nope, it's pretty dead... until sony tries to refresh it again... again...
Professional... well I'll figure that out.

Well, I know my PSP is still alive - although the games I've bought from it recently I've had to import from the States as they're not available over here (Persona 3 Portable, Persona Portable) and the ones I play most are things like Disgaea, Disgaea 2 and Final Fantasy Tactics.

I enjoyed Dragon Quest IX, but can't help but feel I enjoyed DQ8 on the PS2 more.

Mine is still alive and Kicking...

Monster Hunter FTW!

They pretty much botched the Wii version, so we are left with the PSP ones, which are much better and more intense to play

(I wish they would do one on the PS3.... )

Well i think it's mostly due to the reorganization of PSP development.

The new refreshes are supposed to come out next year (I believe) and no one is really buying PSP right now. As a publisher / developer, I would be focusing my efforts on the new product (because people buy new things) rather than the stagnant waters of the current generation. My 2 Cents.

In other news, I'm probably going to pick up a PSP 1001 soon. It's a good Media Player and Lots of free games for it. I've had two PSP's in my life and I've quite enjoyed them. The homebrew scene is still very active.

At the NGP conference, a few developers were on hand to show their support for the system and demonstrate what it can do. Hideo Kojima showed a cutscene from Metal Gear Solid 4 that had been ported to the Next Generation Portable, and representatives from Epic were on hand to show the Unreal engine running on the system. A new Uncharted game was revealed (which is being developed under Naughty Dog's supervision), and a new Call of Duty was announced for the platform.

They are saying it can run PS3 ports.

Not surprising, it's a lower res screen.

I don't think any PS3 games really push the PS3 hardware yet. Yes, even GT5. It won't be until the end of the systems life that games come out which really push the envelope of what is capable; that's the way it's always been.

To be fair it is quite a step up from the first PSP. Basically 4x the resolution.

960 × 544 compared to 480 x 272

The PS3 also upscales a lot.

Indeed. 640p is basically the standard for an alarming number of PS3/360 'AAA' games.

Hadn't realised the PSP2's screen was that high a res - thought it was 800x480 or something like that. Knew that the PS3 upscaled a lot, though. For that matter, so does the XBox360...

So I just found out some PS3 games cannot output higher than 720p. Upscaling or not.

Suck.

PS3 doesn't upscale.

It does. At least to 720p for games in like 640p etc. http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/counting-pixels-gta-iv-runs-at-630p/

The console never ever outputs a 640p signal to my knowledge.

IIRC FFXIII gameplay is native 720p and the cut scenes are native 1080p. So the gameplay is upscaled to 1080p.

Hmmm.... interesting, then how come they still have games that don't upscale to 1080p?

Basically the PS3 upscales like crap and it is performance intensive.

These are old but might help.
