How do I use a text editor for fixing the original Far Cry?

Sorry but I tried to reply at the Far Cry solutions thread but apparently that is not allowed so I resorted to a new post.

I have tried the solution to the Far Cry hack to change the FOV but since I have never even used a text editor before this attempt, I have failed miserably. The only reason I own a computer is for the gaming and I'm not that good with computers and don't know a thing about text editors. Is there someone with enough patience to explain to a moron like me how to use a text editor to perform this hack for the original Far Cry 1.4 ? Thank you!

It's been a while, but the solution on this site works perfectly. With two versions I've had and with all patch versions.

I got the info from the Master Games List, at far left. I can only assume it's copied verbatim to the thread in the Solutions section you speak of.
