Recommend me some online Co-op games

Post by AussieTimmeh »

My brother and I no longer live in the same city due to work, but one thing we like to do to stay in touch is to play Co-op games online. The problem is that we're starting to run low on known good games. We recently got burned with Splinter Cell Conviction, looked good on paper but the reality was a major let down because it rarely works online (if I ever meet any from Ubisoft....  ).

Games we did enjoy alot:
BF1942 + addons
SWAT3
SWAT4
Operation Flashpoint - Dragon Rising and user made maps
Resident Evil 5
Commandos and the sequels
Company of Heroes
Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 Spec Ops
Alien Swarm
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2

Not so much:
Splinter Cell Conviction - rarely works online, maybe 1 in 10 times, and drops out alot. Curse you Ubisoft, you owe us our money back.

We're not so much into general online multiplayer games, probably because we're not experts and get sick of having our butts handed to us on a plate. We prefer co-op games, set the difficulty on hard and try and try again. We use Steam alot but don't have to. Also not looking at new games only, keen to play older ones that we never found at the time.

Also I use Eyefinity and any games that support it are gold, but not a requirement!

Any recommendations for some awesome gaming or even vaguely enjoyable lol?

It's very underrated on PC in my opinion due to some technical issues I never experienced, but I still will recommend Gears of War. The campaign is relatively lengthy and the visuals look rather stunning, though constantly dark and brown. The "stop n' pop" gunplay is not for everyone but I enjoy it. I am bummed we never got the sequel.

Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead is supposed to be ARMA 2 with a lot more polish and more toys, and the modded maps and missions seem to be great fun. One of the editors of PC Gamer swears by the game and if you watch youtube vids of missions it does seem like an epic co-op experience.

I agree with Borderlands. If the idea of Diablo as a shooter appeals to you buy it ASAP.

One game not on this list yet is Killing Floor. It's not story based, but runs similar to a base defense game... however it's actually a blast to play with your friends and I play it all the time with my brother to keep in touch. The basic premise is this: you and your friends have to survive wave after wave of monsters. If you survive a wave you get a certain amount of $ for all your kills plus a bonus for surviving the wave. You then have 1 minute to run to the trader and buy new guns. Once that minute is up you're on to the next wave which gets increasingly harder. This can get especially intense in the late waves on a long game. The classes are all pretty interesting to play as and for $20 it's a lot of fun.

I can't think of any other titles I have that haven't been mentioned already, but a couple upcoming things might be the Onslaught mode that supposed to be added to the PC version of Bad Company 2, and the Portal 2 co-op.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, Killing Floor doesn't natively support eyefinity but you can get it to work by using the same trick as UT2004 because it was built on that engine. Search the forums for "Killing Floor" and there was a post about it. I got it running great at 5808x1080.

I was going to say LEGO Indiana Jones 2 but online co-op was only added to the console versions.

I had a blast with Rainbow6:2 (the first was horrible multiplayer). There are it's quirks battling the AI, but it's more difficult than swat4 for sure.

and I agree with borderlands. I played it on xbox for many many hours.
