10.4 drivers discussion - no 5x1 support :(

Post by doublejj0305 »

I was hoping that the official 10.4's would have the 5x1 portrait but no luck. However it did fix the problem with my monitors going into Power save mode so thats a big plus!

New video drivers hmmm?

I suppose I'll update then. Currently some games have an occasional 10-second freeze (max. once per session on Forged Alliance, though Trine managed it twice in a row, once), with Windows log claiming a graphics hardware crash... last time it mentioned displayport failure or something along those lines. Perhaps new drivers will end that permanently.

What made them go into power save?

I posted most of the interesting bits in the Release Notes here: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/ATI_Catalyst_Eyefinity_Feature_Changelog

Edit: I changed the topic title a bit and made it a sticky. Going to keep it up for a while for general discussion on the new driver update.

Site must be down getting a server error when searching for the driver.

Having profile issues again. For some reason it will never remember my layout when switching from eyefinity to extended. Looks like the driver has re produced old issues again WTH, it takes two shortcut clicks to configure layout correctly. Why is that.

I have a question about uninstalling. I uninstall using the driver file, then restart and run driver sweeper in safe mode restart, then install new driver and restart. Everytime I do this. It always remembers my layout for extended. So I go ahead and save a profile and shortcut. I then create a group for eyefinity and save a shortcut.

After I do this I then click on my extended shortcut and my monitors are mixed up. I click on my eyefinity shortcut and it is perfect. I then click on extended shortcut and my monitors are mixed up differently.

What is going on? Also is there a new crossfire profile dl for the 10.4 drivers.

Thats a good question... It all started when I put in the new eyefinity cards. I tried many different drivers and all resulted in the same thing. 2 of the 5 monitors would come on all the time but the other wouldn't unless I power cycled them. All is well now though :)

I believer there is a new crossfire profile as well as a new Hydragrid

I would imagine there is a re detection of screens after reinstall of drivers. You might avoid this, if they are connected according to detection order.

Going to go back to 10.3 one of my monitors keeps randomly just shutting off. I have never had this happen before and think this is what the above person was talking about monitor going into power saving mode. It is usually just one of my monitors. Also sometimes when I restart one of my monitors will just freeze and I have to unplug and plug it back in. I also just restarted a little bit ago and one of my monitors was going through a cycle mode of colors. Blue, Green, gray, white, red something like that and would just cycle I have to unplug it and plug it back in.

And then my profiles never work correctly. Even when I fix them and overwrite it they never remember the new settings. This is getting really really old. Again as I have said in the past there must not be any regression testing that takes place with new driver updates.

Dave can we get some kind of response to this. Why does this keep happening, are you aware of these issues. I just talked to a friend who just recently got 2 5870's first time going with ATI and he has had the same issue with his monitor just shutting off and he has had to unplug it and plug it back in as well just like I have. He said he had never had this problem before. I was talking to him about my problem and he said weird I have been having that problem too but he didn't know what it was. Now it seems to be we have figured it out to be a ATI problem. Note he is only using one monitor as well.

I am just curious if there is any testing that takes place. I am obviously not the only one having these problems so they can't say well it is a generic problem so it is hard to test. All of this is really really irritating and a huge inconvenience. I am trying to work on a senior project and my damn monitor just randomly shuts off. Then I have to go fiddle with it, this should not be happening.

I would just like to know if ATI is still aware of these issues and why they keep reproducing old problems. Is this part of there testing. Are we being the beta testers. I am just trying to see the future with ATI and what they are trying to achieve. Because if it keeps going on much longer. I am selling my cards. And I might just put them up for sale right now because this has happened over and over and over. While it keeps being reproduced. How about trying to fix the major problems in driver releases instead of squeezing 3% performance increase in very old titles that hardly anyone plays. I never understood the point of increase performance in such old titles. If that is not what they were trying to do then just leave it out of the release notes. Because as far as I am concerned that looks pretty lame.

PM me if you do not want to have this convo in the thread. Because I would really like to speak with someone about all the problems I have been having since I went to the red side. I would be more then happy to actually test for you if you need it. I have exp in testing so get back to me.

Strange that my problem was fixed with the 10.4's and you still have it. I started a thread in this forum a week or so ago but no one responded to it so I assumed it was an issue with my system only. Wish I could help you out but all I did was just install the 10.4 over the 10.3b. 4 of my screens are displayport to mini displayport and one is DVI to minidisplay port if that helps any.

Yea I don't know but I did not have this problem with 10.3, however I did have an issue with my profiles sometimes not working correctly which I found very interesting sometimes they worked sometimes they would arrange wrong. But now I am having the monitor shutting off. Sometimes not even coming on after a restart, and then going into a cycle of different colors.

I don't know what the deal is to be honest. But I find it weird that a friend is having the same issues with his monitor shutting off, and he also has to unplug it and plug it back in. He said it has happened around 5 times in a month and he had to completely unplug it or unplug the DVI cable to get it to come back on. Both of us are unable to use our power buttons when this happens. It is like it freezes the whole monitor. He is using 10.3.

Is that what was happening to you as well?

I hear ya, I couldn't play any games for the last few weeks because of it. Everytime I would try to go into a game in eyefinity mode only two of the three would be working then I would have to power cycle it, then the game would go into window mode, and so on. It's a big headache!!! I haven't tried profiles since 9.12's (which I had not luck)

So is that what was happening to you what I posted above about having to unplug the monitor. You mention power cycle were you able to do this with your power button on monitor or did you have to unplug the monitor or the DVI cable. What method did you have to do?

I tried both ways but if I turned the monitor off for about 5 seconds and then back on it would work about 50% of the time or another monitor would go out and I would have to do the same thing. Whenever I shut down my computer and booted it back up it would take about 5 minutes to get all the monitors in sync. Trying to start a video game was just too time consuming, wouldn't even bother till these new drivers which fixed all my problems.

I'm looked at the release notes and nothing was mentioned about this.

before selling off your cards I would try a fresh install of windows with the 10.4's, just a suggestion. These new drivers haven't had one screen go into "power save mode"

HAHA you still have not answered my question and are making me even more confused. I asked what method of turning off your display you had to do when this happened?

Were you able to turn off your display with the "power button", or did you have to "unplug" your monitor.

When this happens to me I have to unplug it because the power button does not do anything. I have touch buttons not a push button maybe that is why.

I am really not about to reinstall windows, that is a huge inconvenience to me. I am in the middle of a senior project class. And it just does not seem like something people should have to do just to get drivers and cards working properly. Maybe ATI should sort there drivers out, and not leave it up to genie pigs haha.

My bad, I just hit the power button the front of the monitor, They light would turn yellow--wait 5 seconds-- hit the power button-- light turns blue (on).

I have always been able to turn on/off the monitors.

I'm runnning 4 x u2410's and 1x 2509wps (or something like that)

Hmmm yea mine just go black and the light stays blue like it is still on but I am unable to turn the monitor off with the button. When they are actually off the light turns red. The only way I can get the display back when this happens is to pull the plug. The same exact thing is happening to my friend.

And again I don't think reinstalling windows is the practical solution. I can only imagine if this was a company machine, reinstalling windows all the time could be a real problem. I find it funny when people think the resolution to everything is reinstalling windows.

I am also having an issue after updating to the 10.4 drivers. My DisplayPort monitor just turns off after a while. I have to disconnect the video cable and plug it back in to get it to work. I am going to revert back to 10.3b.
