Need Help ordering Moniters for Eyefinity

Post by marcdaddy »

Guys i need a little help. Budget for 3 moniters is $1200, i have one Acer P243w 24 inch moniter now but i can sell it and get 3 matching moniters. My question is besides the 3 moniters what else do i need. Im currently using a i7 920 and a XFX 5870 card. Thanks for all your help in advance guys :o

You'll need display port cables.

The most economical place I buy monitors from has been the Dell Outlet on refurbished monitors. Make sure you buy 3 that can rotate into portrait mode to give you more flexibility down the road.

I've got 3x vw246h
Awesome monitors just read some of the reviews. Although the mounts suck, i got a cheap three way mount off ebay for about $90, that I can have in landscape or portrait.. the switch only takes about 5min, lol.
Oh yes, and an active displayport adapter, hard to get a working one on the first shot though.

Ahh ok so now i understand, Out of the 3 moniters 2 are hooked up via DVI, and the 3rd moniter needs to have Displayport built into it or i need the adapter which is basically gonna be $100 correct?

Yes, 2 on DVI and one on display port.
I opted to buy display port monitors... since you are buying new, that should be very easy to find. The adapters are more for folks trying to get use out of old monitors that don't have display port.

I would be careful about running cheaper monitors in portrait mode. Most cheaper monitors use TN panels, which have fairly narrow horizontal viewing angles and even narrower vertical viewing angles. Using them in landscape mode may be ok, but portrait mode tends to exacerbate the issue with narrow vertical view angles (since they now become horizontal). If you are going to run portrait mode, I'd get a PVA/MVA or IPS panel based LCD. The downside is they tend to be significantly more expensive than TN based ones.

You are correct, I wasn't aware of the limitations but I've now experienced that first hand :-) It is annoying if you don't have them arranged just right and your head is in the perfect location to view them.
