Starcraft 2 - what are the odds?

Post by fatlazyhomer »

The beta will be out this month, but what are the odds it will support surround? I really doubt it cause blizzard is pretty anal about making it "fair". But seeing how WoW worked, who knows. Did WC3 work?

I imagine their stance will be very measured on Starcraft, regardless of which way they decide. It's not that big a deal for WoW, but for starcraft there is a very active (serious) competitive community. America is to Baseball as South Korea is to Starcraft. :D

Personally, I don't think multimonitors is a big advantage in a RTS. Just played AOE3 the other day in eyefinity and it was more cumbersome than anything... (super stretched menu aside). The only awesome RTS in triple wide is Sins of a Solar Empire because you lean back and enjoy the view instead of managing your army all that much.

That said... I hope SC2 works with eyefinity even though it'll only be a novelty for me. Most likely going to go back to single monitor to play seriously.

Multi-mon isn't a big advantage in RTSes cause none of them have done it right.. the only game that has come close is Supreme Commander with its dual monitor support - you get 2 viewports, 1 per monitor. Unfortunately the secondary monitor was missing all the HUD elements.

Proper done multi-mon support would mean let people have as many viewports as they want by default split 1 per monitor. Then you could use one monitor just as a giant mini map, one perhaps for base building or any "watch spot" , and the middle one for all the action.

I have a friend who has tried SC2 in eyefinity and confirmed that it works. That being said it could still be vert- for all I know.

WC3 was stretched, but that was prior to widescreen.

I have it, and it would not detect my 5040x1050; however, i didn't try to force it either.

Even with distortion at both extremes, I think it´s and very considerable advantage, much more than in shooters (though less than flight sims).

In DoW2 and CoH, I still need to move frecuently the camera, and I can´t control perfectly units at the very left/right side of lateral mons, but I can watch way more of the terrain and get a better idea of what It´s happening now in the terrain, wich I think It´s a clearly advantage (in DoW2 In can see from corner to corner in some maps). For that, I sit way more ahead than usual for FPS. Peripheral vision is not important for strategy games, extended vision is.

Proper multimon would be better, of course, I agree with that.

I'm jumping over here from this thread, looking for surround info on SC2.

So are you saying that 5040x1050 doesn't even show up in the in-game video options menu? If that's true it's not a good sign. :(

If you care to try some testing of surround resolutions (assuming you can find a method that works) and post some screenshots that would be awesome. A lot of people are interested in this, and if TH/EF does not work in SC2 the only way I can see it possibly getting support in the final release is with a massive grassroots campaign starting now.

I don't see why it wouldn't work I mean my friend WAS indeed running it with TH2G a year+ ago. Resolutions seem to be propagating dynamically on my system. It is limited to 1024x768 though. That means no 720p (1280x720 is lower than 768 on the vertical axis)

There are 4 methods, one of them is sure to work unless the aspect ratio has gotten locked (which would be a real shame, and I would actually be talking to some of my friends in high places if that is the case..)

Native fullscreen + in game resolution options

Native fullscreen + config options (cfg located in "C:Documents and SettingsDaFoxMy DocumentsStarCraft II BetaVariables.txt" on windows XP the width and height values are the ones that you are looking for)

Windowed fullscreen (This simply locks to your desktop resolution, Great feature that was first used in the Source Engine I believe. It allows you to alt tab without removing the game from [video] memory, which saves upto 10-15 seconds on each alt tab)

Windowed (In game resolution options work I believe, you can also dynamically resize the window, there is also a separate entry for windowheight & windowwidth in the config file)

I must say they put quite abit of time and thought into these options.

That's good information. I'll remember to find you for any future Blizzard-related queries. ;)

Borderless windowed mode is indeed a sweet feature. Nice to see other devs besides Valve offering that ability.

I don't see in the game support for 5760x1200, it only goes till 1920x1200 for me... I haven't tried to alter anything manually yet.

Manually setting width as 5040, windowed full screen, and windowed mode produce negative results. This either includes wrong resolution and aspect ratio, or issues with the mouse cursor moving the camera.

Fullscreen- No option for eyefinity resolution

Windowed maximized-

And finally,
Windowed(fullscreen)-cannot change resolution.

Maybe it will work but you'll end up losing most games with that set up. It also stresses your eyes too much. Triple monitor isn't suitable for RTS games. Can't have minimap, etc. on other screens.
