Mass Effect 2

Post by Tanuki »

Next week.

Am privately terrified that the HUD will stop scaling at 1280x720 like Dragon Age making it unplayable on my current system.

Other than that, go Bioware.

I'm hoping for surround support.

I got Mass Effect 1 this weekend that i'll start playing on monday, but I would expect if the hud is fine in mass effect 1 it'll be fine in mass effect 2.

I am guessing it will have native support either like DA:O or like Dark Athena.

Mass Effect was ported to PC by a different company. Bioware is doing ME2 as far as I know. Excluding Mass Effect, I have never seen a Bioware game with full HUD scaling (Maybe MDK2). Dragon Age is the only one I have seen with partial scaling.

ME and ME2 are the first (?) Bioware games on a third party engine though. (UE3)
It should function the same as ME1.

If you get my hopes up, and then they get dashed. There will be consequences.

I have this preordered on amazon with release date shipping and they haven't sent it yet. Are they going to overnight it on Monday? They better, or I will pitch a fit!

Anyway, can't wait. I have heard from dirty filthy pirates that this one is even less of an RPG though... doesn't bother me really, I looked at the original as a shooter with RPG elements, but if it's less of an RPG than that it must barely be an RPG at all.

You didn't have to hear it from pirates ;) It has been known for a few months now based on early previews. Game journalists have gotten to sit down and play the first 90 minutes of it. And what I have heard isn't that they took away the RPG elements but built on the action elements, so its much more of a solid shooter than the original.

Now~ something that we have heard from pirates is its extremely poor Widescreen and Surround support. :x Worse than ME1... (Sorry Tanuki! :( )

Yeah. They knew the RPG part was great about ME1, but the biggest complaint people had with the game was how poor of a shooter it was. So for ME2, they left the RPG elements intact (and likely improved them), and then enhanced combat a whole lot more. This is why you see a lot more combat trailers probably.

I am hearing from dirty filthy pirates that they did remove RPG elements, not just improve shooter elements. For instance one told me you have half the number of skills and weapons do not have stats, just different functions.

This is all hearsay though, until shown otherwise, and honestly Mass Effect was such a shooter at heart anyway it doesn't bother me... I like shooters.

Not sure how it fares in surround by ME1 has fine widescreen support, despite what the DR might have said. It was clearly based on 16:9 and in fact only displayed in 16:9 on console, even in 4:3... the frame was simply opened up for taller resolutions for the PC version.

I think this has some half-truth to it.

In ME1, you could "mix" classes with their abilities and such. So while you may have been a soldier, you could put points in things you didn't really need or care to use. With ME2, from the trailers of each class, they did a lot more specialization to each individual class. There are now abilities that only specific classes can use.

I found this image on BioWare's forums:

There are definitely less things you can level, but I'm fine with that. When you played before, there were really only a couple ways to build a character anyway, with lots of useless stuff in between.

Besides, there's a lot more to a RPG than just putting points into abilities. :)

I can't wait for ME2, hopefully I will have a new computer by the time I get the game.
I pre-ordered the CE, but apparently that version is delayed in a whole bunch of European countries, due to a production problem with the artbook or something.

Have to wait until Feb 4 now, which is kinda sad, but it also gives me more time to play through ME1 again.

I'd avoid the Bioware ME forums, there are trolls spamming game spoilers in thread titles. I really can't understand why some people choose to be colossal dicks to random people. Saddening.

Someone at Bioware is really enamored with the whole 'Paragon' thing it seems... :D

Well. My Amazon status changed to shipping soon on the CE and the Strategy Guide did ship today so hopefully I'll get a tracking on the CE later today and get it tomorrow.

Update: Just received Amazon notice that the CE have shipped.

Mine says "shipping soon" as well and still lists tomorrow as the arrival date. Usually overnights go out at 7pm though... oh well, I'm not getting worked up over it, I still have to finish ME1 again before I play ME2 (I'm on Ilos).

Well, UPS F**ked up, tracking show that it's on the truck out for delivery but our normal truck came by hours ago with just one package (and not ME2 related). Not happy ;-P
