3D capable Monitors (120Hz) - when and at what price?

Post by Bluesilentpro »

Hi

As this 3D-thing is getting over us in 2010 i'm just curious when there will be serious 3D-capable monitors out threre. Afaik the only one available atm ist this small ugly Samsung 2233RZ. Moreover Samsung has this ridiculous MD 230 Six-Screen-Monster but this won't be a solution for an allround-desktop i think and its not for 3D.

I'm currently running S-PVA/S-IPS Panels and I would like to see 24" or bigger high-quality screens with ultrathin bezel for Triplehead 3D-Surround-Gaming. Will this be possible in 2010? What do you know/think?. :)

You will not find that kind of monitor on the market atm, whether one comes out or not will depend allot on the uptake of 3D gaming. I'm not even sure if there is a 24'' 120Hz monitor out atm, and ultra thin bezels are rare in normal monitor market atm.

I think that 120Hz monitors are all gonna be TN panels. And they aren't gonna be cheap.

Yuck.

I see. Looks like we just have to wait some time. Hope new screens are on the way...

LG W2363D, ASUS VG242H , ACER GD 245H ARE THE 24" MODELS SUPPOSED TO BE OUT THIS YEAR WITH ACER IN THE LEAD WITH A
RELEASE DATE OF Q1, SO SOMETIME IN THE NEXT MONTH OR TWO.

DELL ALIENWARE OPTX AW2310 IS A 23" ALSO BEING PROMICED FOR
2010.

I'M NOT WAITING ANYMORE JUST TO BE THEIR GUINNEA PIG . I'M GOING
ATI EYEFINITY FOR NOW AND WAIT IT OUT. BESIDES, ATI IS SUPPOSE TO
HAVE A FIX COMING FOR THE BEZEL ISSUE VERY SOON.

I wonder if they will release 1920x1200 120Hz monitors, toms hardware said 3d surround would be limited to 1920x1080 but unless my math is wrong duel link dvi cables can support monitors up to 1920x1200 at 120Hz.

I think your math is wrong. Mine may be wrong too :doh , but here goes: 2560x1600x60Hz = 245,760,000 pixels/sec MAX. If you double the refresh to 120Hz, you will cut the resolution in half. So 1920x1200x120Hz = 276,480,000 which is greater (+12.5%) than the max allowed. However, 1920x1080x120Hz = 248,832,000 is also greater than the max, but by a much smaller margin (+1.25%) so they may be able to easily get away with that.

Regarding the monitors, I don't see why they couldn't release 1920x1200 120Hz monitors, they would just use HDMI or DP instead of DVI. I believe HDMI has the bandwidth headroom.

EDIT: Of course it's not that cut and dry. I suppose they could use other "tricks" to get it to work, but something would had to suffer as a result.

Afaik 3DVS should support even 2560x1600 in 3D. I definitely won't downgrade to 23-inchers. I don't care about Full HD. I want a gaming monitor, not a TV. 1920x1200 is my minimum.

Your maths is right but Duel Link DVI can support 5040x1050@57Hz which is 301,644,000. Hense why it should support 1920x1200@120Hz. In fact my graphics card is happy at 5040x1050@59Hz which is 312m.

Good point. I hadn't even thought about that. There's obviously something more complicated going on. I doubt NVidia would just randomly pull a number out of the hat and go with it. And maybe Matrox did something wonky that shouldn't have been done to make the Triplehead2go work. I mean, look how troublesome it's been for people to get their resolution working at 5040.

I wouldn't go pointing any fingers at either direction right now. As hard as it is to wait (and as fun as it can be to guesstimate) ultimately we need to plug stuff in to see if it works. ;)

Bluesilentpro - forgot to say this in my first reply... not seen you around for ages, welcome back. :)

Thanks.:) I moved from Germany to Switzerland a while ago and much has changed since then. This is a great forum and its the best source for talking about uncommon monitor setups. Hope I can share some of my experiences here to. :)

Seems we really have to wait a bit. Hope CeBit in March will bring some news to the 3D-Monitors.

All this talk about 3D in the media got me pretty much hyped, but it really is a problem that most 120Hz panels are limited to 22" or so with a 1680x1050 resolution. As im planning to upgrade my TV sometime this year i got the idea about a 120Hz TV, maybe even a 3D-able one so i could use it for pc- or ps3-games and some 3d-burays ...

... lets keep dreaming ...

Any news on 3D-capable monitors? All monitors I'm aware of (/Samsung 2233RZ, Alienware) are to small and not really perfect for triplehead.

The Acer GD245hq S3D Ready true widescreen is a very nice monitor for 3D, very bright which, of course, is required for 3D. Especially nice in the surround setup. There are currently only 3 monitors that I am aware of that are directly supported by nvidia. Alienware, Acer Samsung. But ASUS are releasing a 27 inch shortly. Check it out below.

I want a 1080p TV that can do 120Hz... :- All those 3D capable screens from Samsung and other makers such because they STILL can't do 120Hz over HDMI making them useless for 3D Vision :(

I could get a smaller one BUT I already have a triple wide 22" setup... don't want to buy even more monitors again.
