What's a good RTS game for Eyefinity

Post by direwolf »

What's a good RTS game for Eyefinity that will run at 5760 x 1080?

I tried Earth 2160, but the menu screens were stretched to point where I couldn't read them. I also tried AoE III but that had a similar problem and the FOV was too close and couldn't zoom out enough.

Any recommendations?

NONE OF THEM! Either

1) The HUD is stretched
2) Horrible Fish-eye effect
3) The HUD is on opposite sides

Ive tried it on DoW2 and CoH, both support the resolution natively. DoW2 is the more playable of the two, but scrolling from one side to another in landscape takes too long. Unless you want to give up hotkeys, you cant use the arrows either. Portrait mode is much better, though the bezels sometimes interfere. Even then, you need to find a camera hack that lets you pan out more, otherwise you have gigantic units.

I know World in Conflict works, so you can try that. Supreme commander should be good too since the UI is completely customizable, and I think there is a constant camera angle for the entire map.

I suspect that the new Total War game might have ...

Napoleon: Total War
Professional... well I'll figure that out.

Have you tried Empire Total War? I have it on my steam account but it's not installed yet.

The Total War series games are good. Also Civilization 4 series work good too. C&C3 series are pretty much broken though. So I've got 2 posative recommendations and one negative.

I gave World in Conflict demo a try, but it just crashes on startup. Supreme commander demo works no problems, so I might get the full version of that.

Edit the game.cfg file in the Age3Startup folder.

Change the lines maxZoom=xxx
normalZoom=xxx
I have them set at 160 and 120. Works great.

You'll also want to reduce the default cloud values from these:
wmCloudFreq=0.1
wmCloudPersistence=0.3
wmCloudOctaves=4
wmCloudTimeScale=0.0005

You might want to try Battleforge. IIRC the tile is free todownload now (you just pay for more card sets).

Supreme Commander 2 and Sins of a Solar Empire work great. the HUD is on the center monitor, and the other two arent distorted. Other than that...idk

I had similar issues with the WiC demo. I grabbed the full game on sale and found that the numerous post-release patches to the retail code did a great job stabilizing and improving the engine. If you want the game and find it cheap somewhere it might be worth a purchase.

Anyone tried the BFME2/RotWK Triplehead mods in Eyefinity? The name says Triplehead but it should work for EF as well. It does have a stretched HUD and a couple menu issues IIRC, but is very playable. Learning some keyboard shortcuts could even enable gameplay with the HUD turned off most of the time. See link in my sig for the mods.

I must admit, eyefinity kind of sucks for competitive play. Few games if any have an optimized HUD for landscape. And Bezels are so intrusive in portrait mode.

Scrolling can also be a pain.

I'm almost considering buying a 30" down the line strictly for RTS's. But I first want a big ass HDTV first and a PS3.

I guess it's really just a question of preference. I have no problems in portrait mode, and love it.

Supreme Commander 1&2 work well.

My favourites are ...Faces of War, Men of War and Men of War Crimson Tide.

This is an excellent WW2 series of RTS that runs on triple screen natively.
