So apparently it is possible for a Steam game to sell out...

Observe:

I think they were selling this for something like two bucks today. Good thing I got mine back when it was $20 (and came with collector's artwork and some pewter figurines and a fancy-pants tin case).

It tells me someone was not happy with the price point, because instead of reverting back to a different price point it's sold out.

2k are terrible at the moment.

They adjusted the price of Borderlands (Australia) on steam UP from ~$50 USD to $90 USD..........
And then the whole auto-patch securom update to Borderlands (yeah i know it didn't actually install securom unless you got the DLC)
And the higher DLC price for Australia

And now this.....

GRrrrrrrrr

Steam has run out of keys before, it is a real thing that can happen. Prey has multiplayer and you need a key to access it, if the game is out of keys people would not be able to play online and they would complain endlessly, even though no one cares about playing online with Prey.

Yes, I am cynical about most things in life. Mostly because everything I see has been filtered though a marketing department sometime at least once. A marketing department will sell you crap on a stick and tell you it's chocolatey goodness. :nudgenudge

Makes sense to me. I purchased two 5870's 2 weeks ago and am still waiting for my download copy of Dirt 2. :|

Appearently, in addition to a shortage of components for the actual boards, bits and bytes are also in short supply these days.

Yep many third party games with their own CDKey system require publishers to give them to steam so that users can authenticate with the master servers.

Don't all of you get it? They didn't "run out of bits and bytes"; Arsenal Gear started filtering the Prey discount!

It's the publisher's responsibility to provide the CD-keys. All of the publisher's whose games go on sale know when it'll happen, so it must have sold many many times more what anyone thought it would.

I'm very interested to know what the sales stats are for this Steam sale; I bet that the rate of sale of all the discounted items more than makes up for any loss of them being so much cheaper...

The thing I find most interesting there is that it sold 2500 copies the week before the sale at full price with zero promotion years after release.

Really makes you wonder what the top ten sellers are selling. I have this feeling Steam sales numbers are extremely impressive and no one really knows. I mean, we do get PC ports of damn near everything despite boxed retail sales being pathetic.

It's so impressive today that thier purchase authorization servers are barfing. I've been declined on every variation of purchase source I have for sales today on Steam. How annoying is that?

Still less annoying than going out to the mall to get deals of this caliber :o
