Anyone use Eyefinty 100% time?

Post by direwolf »

I'm just wondering if anyone uses Eyefinity for non game stuff? i.e. permanently set to Eyefinity rather than extended desktop.

Most of the time, like for web browsing, I'm in single monitor. I'll go dual monitor - extend mode, for multi-tasking. I use Eyefinity for gaming only.

I stay in eyefinity all the time and have started using hydragrid to map the 3 screens out with dividers so i can use different applications on each screen more easily.

I prefer this to extended mode but hydraGrid could use some more configuration options.

I run it 100%. Haven't had a need to switch to extended (yet). Pretty new install. I doubt I'll need to switch until I jones for some Astroids and need to crank up Mame.

That sentence has little to do with my personal habits. :|

Also, once I get a VPN client from work that they support under Win7, I will be 100% off of XP. Still need to fire it up to logon and RDP to my desk. Could run Virtual PC under 7, but limited to 1024 and thats weaksauce.

I am down to getting flicker only once in a great while. Mainly when I get impatient and ALT-Tab out and kill a game.

I haven't had a look at the hydragrid thing yet. That might be handy.

Yeah I have hydragridded (new word!) the three screens and it is fine, no if only I could move the windows start symbol etc nto the centre screen.

Originally I use extended and shortcuts for EF, but since the short cuts only work 1 time out of three or four meaning I have to make a new group a lot of the time, I went to EF 100%

I don't know if this was in the older driver, but after installing the 9.12 hotfix driver, I noticed there was a selection:

Start -> All Programs -> Catalyst Control Center -> Restart Runtime

I've found that "Restart Runtime" acts similar to rebooting the system, and if I'm not getting Eyefinity profiles to change when selected, I can sometimes use restart runtime, and then attempt the switch again with some success.

Im in eyefinity 100% of the time these days. Just not really willing to toggle to extended mode for a few checks of my email then back to eyefinity to play a game.

Its not too hard for me to work on the computer in eyefinity mode.

I don't think I understand the Hydragrid too well. I turned it on, set it to a grid pattern where each screen is one cell in the grid. I dragged a window to that screen, hit maximize and it still filled up all 3 monitors. I thought it would maximize just to fill that grid?

Once you have set the grid up where you want it (you can drag, delete and add to the grid; make sure you enable it) you have to right click on the windows 'top bar' (I dunno what it is called, LOL, the blue bit at the top!) and select 'attach to grid'.

I use EF 100%, it's nice having 3 apps up at a time, each app on it's own monitor.

I use for PLC Programming, and HMI Screen editing for work stuff, and for fun stuff besides gaming it's nice for Hammer(L4D).

Having used Eyefinity for a day now, I think I will mainly stick using it 100% of the time. I will still need to go back to extended mode to play games that don't support Eyefinity (BF2 :( ).

Some points I have noted:

[list][*]I would be nice if Windows would allow moving the start button and taskbar notification icons along the actual taskbar so they could be put on the center screen.[/*:m]
[*]Hydragrid seems to work pretty well[/*:m]
[*]Remote Desktop window doesn't like Hydragrid - it won't stick to a grid.[/*:m]
[*]Switching between Catayst profiles is buggy - it will be good once driver support matures a bit[/*:m][/list:u]

If you have each mode assigned to a hotkey, you can push it multiple times to get it to switch. Usually going to extended mode takes 2 tries, and back to EF takes 3.

Thankfully all games I currently play can handle EF (except for Mass Effect, which I get around by running in windowed mode), otherwise I'd be screwed, since my desk is only big enough to run EF in portrait mode
