5xxx HDMI audio to TV?

Post by Abram »

I've searched around and can only find vague adn fuzzy answers.

So.
I have an X-Fi sound card.
I'm getting a XFX 5870.
I will connect it to my to-be TV with HDMI inputs.
Do I have to connect my sound card to my video card somehow, or will the audio data from my sound card be sent back to the video card to go out through HDMI? Will the audio go to my video card alongside the sound card? Will it send it to the card first, or vise-versa? Or will it not work at all, and I'd have to use my on-board audio to get it to work?

Me confoosed.

Your X-Fi won't be used at all. The 5870 has its own audio decoder. Just make sure the high-def audio drivers were installed with the catalyst package.

You may have to change the sound output in windows to the correct one though to hear it, I'm not sure, I've never used the hdmi audio. In my Playback devices it's listed as "Digital Output Device (HDMI)".

Hm. Interesting. I didn't think ALL the audio could be internal to the video card.. neat. I have separate 5.1 speakers so I doubt I'll use HDMI audio too often, but it's good to know, nonetheless.

Thanks.

Yeah, all audio will be done by the video card if you use the HDMI output (and select HDMI audio). MPC is nice because you can use HDMI audio without making your whole PC default to it.

Well that's handy, as MPC is the only media player i use, other than power DVD Ultra for DVDs.

Now all i have to do is wait...... and wait.... and wait.....
