Anyone In or waiting for STO Closed Beta

Post by Wiz33 »

Not asking anyone to discuss closed beta info as it violates the NDA but I guess you can say you're in the beta without getting in trouble. Just want to see if any other member are in and maybe we can fleet up or at least wave at each other if we happen to pass by ;-P

I applied but never heard anything... I assume it was because my questionaire answers made me seem like a Trek fanboy and they want more casual people to like the game.

Side note: finally watched the new movie and it was terrible.

Professional... well I'll figure that out.

It was an OK Sci-Fi movie... had some editing issues I thought, but fun and enjoyable. It was not a Star Trek movie though.

To each his own on the movie itself but you have to admit that their cast selection is pretty top notch and Spock prime rules ;-P

Yeah, the new Spock was probably the highlight of the film. I just personally have issue with rebooting a series to be more dumbed-down and fast-paced, it feels like it is not the same series, and it has no continuity, so why call it Star Trek? I expected a Star Trek movie and didn't get one (technically I didn't expect one which is why I took so long to see it despite being a Trekkie).

They did the same thing with Bond, the new movies are fun Bourne-like spy movies, but they are not Bond movies. Why call them that?

Old, stuffy Bond, or new revitalized Bond. I preferred the new revitalized, and that means Pierce for me. The old Bond movies were cool for the gadgets, but it's laced with era dialog that is boring, and there's decidedly less action. I loved the Bourne series, and sat down one day, and watched it back to back, 9 hours later, I was happy.

Star Trek has been kind of hit or miss for me, even though I absolutely love TNG and Enterprise, I found Voyager and DS-9 interesting enough to hold me over, and TOS was wayy too... I guess the term is 'campy' even though I would say 'retarded', for me. The success of Enterprise in creating an engaging pre-Kirk story has captured my interest to watch the introduction of Kirk in the new movie. The TOS movies I loathed, and the TNG movies were hit or miss, some I could bear to watch, others I was just sucked in.

Back on topic, I'm waiting to get in on this STO Beta... I've wanted to fly my own Trek ship before, and have with some other games, but they weren't as fun. I currently fly spaceships in EVE online (and enjoy it very much), so that'll be my comparison for this new fledgling game.

Whoever gets in I'd like to see them press them on surround screen capability. It'll be most likely a MMO I eventually pick up. I don't like the everyone is a Captain nonsense though.

We are turning this into the movie review thread? Well, fine by me. I found Casino Royale to be a breath of fresh air. It has a good story and there's more character development in that one movie than all of the Brosnan and Moore movies put together. I love the move away from fantasy gidget/techno babble back to real action.

I do totally agree with you on Quantum of Solace. It's a total Bourne clone and is really disappointing with minimal story/character growth. I hope they will find a better balance on the next film. To me, Casino now only rank behind the early Connery movies (Diamond does not count) and well ahead of all the others.

While every one is a captain of their own ship, they are not of the same rank. You start off at like Lt. Commander and move up to admiral eventually.

Eve is a sandbox while this is more traditional quest/mission based MMO. It's more fast pace than Eve from all the trailer and such. I mean, when was the last time you manage small fleet combat in Eve without hours of prep time and then hours hunting/camping.

I just don't see changing the entire tone and character of the series as actually making a new entry in the series. The gaming equivalent is something like World of Warcraft after Warcraft 3, both are good games but if you ask RTS fans of Warcraft 3 if they find WoW a sequel, they will say no. I liked Casino Royale as a spy movie, I bought it on disc and have watched it several times, it's just not a Bond movie. I feel like we haven't had a new Bond movie in 6 years and who knows when we will see another one.

You miss the point. Trek isn't about rank, it's about crew interaction. Good luck with that and all those NPCs on the bridge.

They have determined early that crewing a ship does not work and making a player act as an ensign operating the transporter control 200 time to gain a rank makes for a very boring game and I agree. I would hate to sit in some player's ship manning the communication console and saying "hailing frequency opened sir" for a whole night.

P.S. There will be plenty of interaction with other players, beta leaks have rumored a auto team system (optional) when multiple players arrive at the same mission location within a short period of each other, they will be auto teamed in the mission.

They "determined"...the problem there is they're not creative enough nor thinking outside the box enough to make it work right. They're making a casual shooter game where everyone is in hero mode. You do more in a game like Trek than just man a console. The console work is secondary to player interaction and mission work.

Player crewed ships worked perfectly fine in MUD/MUSH/MUSE in the 90's. How come they need to dumb things down so much? I call it the WOW effect... Most guys have no clue how much games have regressed in order to make them publicly acceptable to any old 12 year old gamer.

To bad we can't splice this thread...

I liked it and both my father and I are mild trekkies (with my mother and my wife just along for the ride). We thought it was an excellent reboot, you just can't take the series anymore with the old cast and so it was needed it my view. Go back in time, destroy stuff, kill people, change history and we have the possibility of a new take on an old series (and you can bet that they will do a sequel with how well they did).
Professional... well I'll figure that out.

What kool-aid are you drinking? Sean Connery is and always will be the best bond.
