VNC through a router for WAN access?

I'm trying to use VNC ( a remote desktop viewer) to get to my files from outside my house.

Using my DIR-655 router, i forwarded all the ports that are configured in VNC server. I can use VNC okay over my LAN, but something seems to be keeping me from conencting from a remote locale. :(

Far as i can tell, there's only one section in my router GUI that lets me forward ports, and I've triple-checked that I'm using the correct ones and those ports are not being used by any other program on any computer on my LAN. I've also tried other sets of ports..

There's a splendid set of answers at http://faq.gotomyvnc.com/fom-serve/cache/63.html and they have a page that tests whether your (my) VNC is responding to outside connections, but still no luck.

I have latest router firmware.

Any ideas or help would be lovely... this is really anoying me.

Which version of VNC? I've used UltraVNC for quite some time with no problems.

For me the setup has always been simple. Run VNC server, forward ports from my router = successful login from remote locations using VNCviewer or browser-based client. I use Linksys routers and they've been reliable. My only D-Link was not so great. I assume your router is otherwise performing well?

Do you run any other firewalls/security apps?

I'm not a networking expert, but I'll offer what help I can.

What kind of WAN request blocking does the router use?

Well actually, I haven't gotten around to trying it from elsewhere, but that router help page has a link to a VNC site that checks for responses from your IP. The next palce i can internet accesss from is pretty far, and no one esle in my house is computer literate enough to help.

ANd yes, all other router functions work well. And this particular router has been my favouraite, by far. I've had 4 others. I also have Zonealarm, but I made sure that let VNC through as well.

I'm using VNC 4.2.2 but I guess I'll give Ultra another go.. it's worked in the past.

OR mabye try Radmin or something.. unless anyone can suggest a superior program, free or no?

EDIT: okay well i got Ultra VNC to work. Luckily whiel i was setting it up the guy who introduced me to VNC in the frist place happened to be online and was able to test it for me.

Now all is well.. Assuming the encrytion works once i set it up. Going the paranoid route and using vnc on both computers: from outside to 'other ' machien and vnc in THAT one to access mine. Woner what'll happen if i try to go back into the first machine? Universe collapses? Maybe i should appolgise in advance.

I've done multiple VNC jumps from a remote location to a specific system on my home LAN--it's rather neat stuff. Not sure if I tried a loopback, but I suppose you'll just get the "infinite mirror" effect. Fingers crossed that the universe holds up... ;)

Its a virtual environment so the most you could hope for is breaking the internet.
