I just thought I'd point out Fallout 3 is available for preorder on steam in case anybody would like to know and didn't.

I managed to buy this game a day early for the Xbox 360.

The default is 16:9, and the game scales horizontally.

I think it uses the same engine as Oblivion, so it will probably have the same support for triple head as that did.

I guessed as much but wasn't 100% sure ... dopefishes screens helped confirm it.
Just hope the menus HUD etc are ok.

I've read elsewhere that higher resolutions aren't listed in the options, but that you have to edit an .ini file to achieve them, is this the case?

No. There is a show all resolutions check box.

I got the retail version. My 8800GTX plays it at ultra settings with 15xAF and 4xAA at 1080p. Locked at 60fps solid. GTX = card that refuses to die.
