24" or 46" best option for pc gaming?

Post by jc6699 »

I hope I'm asking this in the correct forum.I have the option of using my 24" dell at 1920x1200 or my samsung lnt4681 46" lcd 1900x1080. The bigger size screen sounds like it would be more fun but will games look stretched and visually not as good as the dell 24"?

I'd prefer it if it was in Hardware or even General Gaming Discussions, but here is far from the worst place you could have put this thread. ;)

Whether 24" or 46" is better for you as a game comes down to two things:

1) How close you sit to the screen.

2) How sensitive you are to aliasing (jagged edges).

If you want to play with your PC like you would a console (at a distance of 5-10ft.) then the 46" screen would be better. If you prefer to use a PC as a PC, and sit with your head about 2ft. away from the screen, then all a 46"er will do is give you massive eyestrain.

Games won't look stretched if they suppose widescreen properly.

As long as you use 16:10 on the 24" and 16:9 on the 46" things shouldn't be scaled/stretched.

As for sitting close, I've been about 3feet from a 42" monitor for months without any more eyestrain then the 23" and 19" monitors before that.

I agree aliasing is a heavy sideeffect though.

Personnaly I'd say why pick, use the 46" for both :)

It's odd. I use my 40" 1080p set for a few games, but tend to focus better (for games like RTS and TBS) on the 24"er.

As with most things, to each his/her/its own.

I was on my 23" 1920x1200 benq for over a year and I found it extremely small even though the large screen space was nice, especially with rpgs like NWN.

I ended up putting it right next to the desk border so I could be up close and personnal.

Compared to the 42" I have now, proportionnaly speaking the image isn't that bigger, I'm keeping the same viewport as on the 23". I'm just not nose sticking on the screen anymore.

The 23" is still useful, I sometimes use it as a text/web screen from 1 pc, while I game on the 42".

I've been using my 37" 1080p HDTV for the pass 6 months as my primary screen.

Resolution wise, you don't lose that much. It is so much more immersive in FPS where the onscreen guns looks about life size!!!

And playing RTS as if you're playing with action figures!

Only thing I would trade the 37" for is a bigger screen 1080p, triple screen or any of the new QuadHD when the prices drop. At the point, I'm going 50" or bigger!

Bigger is better!
