Best 24" monitor?

Hi there, I've a question - which one 24" monitor that is actually best and good for gaming, including some movie watching?

I have came across these two choices, which I think should be good enough -

Only bad thing is the response time, which is "6 ms (gray to gray) typical" :(

Every under 10ms should be the same to your eyes in a modern monitor.

I've used an older Dell 20" @ 16ms...never saw that ghosting...Dell makes good monitors...

that 24" looks pretty!

I wouldn't touch anything made by Acer ever again, after my experiences of their laptops - and their customer support.

The Dell is a nice screen, and the very low response time panels all have compromises elsewhere - usually in colour depth. I'm sensitive to ghosting on slower panels (I can certainly spot it on older TFTs) but I've never seen any on my Dell 2005 or 2405 panels.

I'm sorry PS, but I would have to disagree.
Don't get the 2408WFP. Its got 4 frames of input lag and a lot of other bugs. Wait at least until the new A01 revision comes. Dell says it should have less input lag and some of the problems will be fixed (text sharpness etc.)

Hey, mate, go ahead. :) I don't know the specifics of the newer screens, as until my current ones break, I've got little reason to keep up with the behaviour of the more up-to-date ones.

I'm thinking that most of my post still stands - I just didn't know the details of that 2408.

Ghosting isn't as much of a problem today as inverse ghosting.
This can be found on many panels of today.

Heck if you can afford that much just get the DoubleSight DS-263N 26" and save a few hundred. It's easily the best deal going right now in a large multipurpose display. It also has less than 1 frame of input lag and 5ms refresh for fast gaming response.

It uses the same high grade S-IPS 8 bit panel the NEC LCD2690wuxi does that many use for pro graphics work. The Doublesight even has the same polarizer feature the NEC has for ultra wide viewing angles with no washout.

You won't need any higher spec hardware to drive it as the resolution is the same 1920x1200 that 24" displays have and the pixel pitch is only about 6% larger than a 24" because the actual size is 25.5".

Yeah, I hear about "lottery" that companies use, few months ago I read how users were disappointed with Samsung using lottery monitors.....why are there "lotteries", anyway?

Instead of hoping to be a "winner", can't I just contact the company to provide me what exactly I need? Again, thanks for this piece of information, this monitor's looking promising. Sorry, but what's a polarizer? Is it recommended and must-have?

By the way, I just thought of something - um, what if, instead of having to buy a widescreen or monitors like these, what if you were able to use a projector and that you could say that you bought, say, 101 inch screen for pc gaming? :lol: And 101 inch screen would just appear on the wall or projector screen....can you connect projector to your pc? I'm new at the projectors, though...

If a projector has a VGA or DVI connector (or even HDMI or whatever) it can be hooked up to your computer.

However, I've not seen many affordable projectors that can do decent resolutions. Most of the ones I've seen only do XGA or SXGA. :(

Argggh, by the looks of the latests news you may be better off waiting a bit anyway johnny. Man I hope this lousy lottery ends for good. I thought it was over when I saw Newegg advertising them with polarizer. I won't need to get a new display until the end of the year. Maybe Doublesight's mass production of these will be ironed out by then.

This confusion is no doubt caused by the relationship between LG Philips whom make the raw panels and NEC whom use the polarized versions exclusively. The polarized panels going into the Doublesights are no doubt overstock when NECs units don't reach expected sales. Doublesight must have been given first chance to get them merely out of the shear volume they buy.

If this is the case what's sad about it is getting the polarized panels on Doublesights is likely dependant on NEC units not meeting desired sales levels. It probably also means the lottery will either continue or polarized vesions will no longer be available on Doublesights if NEC tightens their production schedule. The only way I see this lottery ending for good is if Doublesight orders polarized versions exclusively for their 26" display, which would probably mean a price increase.

Anyways, I'm not willing to leap now even if Newegg can verify they have polarizer versions as I've not totally decided whether I want to go monitor or HDTV for my next display. With so many new 1080p models coming out in smaller sizes I prefer to wait and look at my options more thoroughly.

Looks like the new DS model will not ship with a polarizer either - some are thinking the earlier models having a pol. installed was some sort of manufacturing fluke.

Even assuming you don't get the polarizer, it is still a superior H-IPS panel, far better than most on the market, and all panels at or below the $700 range. I may "play the lotto" anyways with no intention of winning, and that way if I do end up with a polarizer, thats great. If not, I still have an excellent monitor.

I wonder if it would be at all possible to add a polarizer to the panel by applying polarized plastic/glass/whatever to the panel itself, in much the same way one can buy/install polarized applications for household windows... that would be something I'd buy if it were possible/available for a fair price.

I wonder if a bunch of people interested in this display were to email the manufacturer with a link to the HardForum thread about it they might consider paying a bit more to get the polarized version of the raw panel from LG Philips and charge a bit more for it so we don't have to go through this lottery BS.
