Post by Dem Pyros »

Okay, Halo 2 Vista is coming out. YAAAAY!!

Halo 2 Vista is a Games for Windows title, YAAAAY!!!!

Now look here

Requirement for the Games for Windows branding, #2:
2) Compatibility. Games for Windows branded titles work on Windows XP and Windows Vista based PCs, including both 32 and 64 bit editions.

On the Halo 2 for Windows Vista page:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
OS: Windows Vistaâ„¢

Is this just the same bulls**t hypocritical crap Microsoft always feeds us, or am I missing something?

I suggest waiting until the game comes out, and see if the "Compatibility" section description changes. If it does not, bring on the class action suit.

I'm sure there will be a hack made pretty quick to allow backwards compatibility, if it ends up not working on XP.

But anyway, the game is utter shit so you don't want it anyway.

It doesn't matter if i want it or not, it's just annoying the shit out of me that they're so hypocritical

You're jumping the gun a bit. The game isn't out yet, so they haven't yet failed their own standards. Frankly, I doubt you're genuinely annoyed - I think you're just looking for "I hate M$" ammo.

I find it more Hypocritical.. yet funny, that they insisted that 1080p and HDMI wasn't needed for the console's. A few months later the Xbox 360 had 1080p... and now there is the "Elite" which has a HDMI port on the back.....

Come on.. LOL

Yet I'm happy with my Xbox 360 premium... As long as it doesn't break again.

....not really. I have enough "I hate M$" ammo from when they banned my xbox from live for absolutely no reason and wouldn't fix it.

I just got excited to play this on my new computer, but don't want to shell out the extra crap money for the still-buggy vista JUST to play the game because Microsoft is sidestepping their own standards.

Just a minute. First you say it doesn't matter whether you want Halo 2 or not. Now you're using your desire to play Halo 2 to justify your annoyance. So which one is it?

good point, I guess only Halo2 will be "different" because its name is "Halo2 for Vista", other Games for Windows games should be for both Xp and Vista etc

Hehe...

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2128056,00.asp

Personally, if you're that desperate to play Halo 2, I think you should go buy an XBox and a budget copy of Halo 2. ;) After all, an XBox is, what, now? £80 (around $160?) Halo 2 on budget is around £20 ($40 in direct exchange rate, although probably about $30 in real life...) Halo 2 PC will probably cost £35 or £40 (real US cost $50, actually cost it should be if exchange rate was adhered to: $70-80... no, I'm not bitter at Rip Off Britain...) and then however much Vista costs... Home Premium is, what, £80 ($160)? And that is OEM, not retail. Average Joe will have to buy a retail copy...

But it's less Microsoft's hypocrisy about Halo 2 and Vista that I care about, and more the fact that they're busy pushing PC gaming as something so wonderful... and then palming us off with shitty ports of two-year-or-older games...

...

As for 32/64-bit support... hehe... maybe they should start pressuring the manufacturers driver coders to actually get their act together when it comes to 64-bit drivers?

Neither.

I said it doesn't matter if i want it or not. That doesn't mean that i don't want it.

If i would play halo again it would be on PC, because now i have the PC setup to actually DO it. I don't want to get an used Xbox again because my TV is 4x smaller than my monitor.

If it's drivers i'm concerned about I would be complaining to Nvidia, but that's not my point.

It would be fine for me if they didn't brand the game as a "Games for Windows" title. The fact that they did shows us that the actual grouping system is useless.

If they can sidestep their own requirements now in order to force people into buying a new operating system, what's stopping them from doing it later? The whole point is to guarantee things for users buying the games and to try to convince developers to put those features INTO their games in order to buy them.

So if i'm walking to the store, and i buy a "Games for Windows" branded game, what am I guaranteed? What they listed on the webpage? Of course not, because they can sidestep that in an instance. I could buy a game that's a "Games for Windows" and have it only work on the newest build of Vista, and only run with a 360 controller after having a Microsoft certified 8800GTX.

All it is, is another way for Microsoft to say "LOOK! SEE! IT'S GUARANTEED!", and then bullshit us gamers, bypassing their own rules so we can't play the games we actually want to without first spending hundreds of dollars on the "best' Microsoft crap.

First Halo 2. What's next, Bioshock? Crysis?

Like cranky said, the game isn't even out yet, so Microsoft doesn't have to change anything yet.

This is how business works.. if you had to hate Microsoft for trying to get your money then you should be hating every single corporation out there.

With that said, I don't like how the game will be Vista only either, but sooner or later I might pick it up. I heard a rumor that you will have to "pay" for multiplayer support, which sounds ridiculous, but I've heard no official news to confirm it.

I'm sure. :)

I tend to buy new stuff, though... I don't like second hand things if I can avoid it. ;) (Obvious exception being musical instruments...)

I'm not hating the fact that they're trying to earn my money...... i'm hating the fact that no one out there seems to care about what they're doing.

Earning my money by advertising - fine.

Earning my money by great games - fine.

Earning my money by great support and quality - fine.

Earning my money by trying to trick us into buying things we can't use - not fine.

You might have to pay for multiplayer support because it's tied into the Windows Live! service, which is a yearly fee.

The "Gold" sub of Windows LIVE is just to play people on Xbox360's and to access certain premium content. Playing just between people on the PC will ALWAYS be FREE.

I welcome it. (But then i already have a LIVE sub ;))

And i doubt it's that people don't care. Halo 2 on PC right from the very start was advertised to us as Vista only. As soon as it was announced it was said to be Vista Only. If someone is "tricked" into buying it thinking it's XP compatible then they should have paid more attention.

If MS want to release it on Vista only they can. You don't shout at developers when they release a "PS3 exclusive" or an "Xbox360 Exclusive".

They just want everyone to buy their new product. Like how new games are released every single year with just another number tacked on. How football shirts are constantly updated. How our hardware is considered redundant 3 months after we buy it.

At the end of the day, buying an OS will be cheapest thing you ever purchase when considered on a price:usage ratio.

1.) You don't shout at developers for PS3 exclusive or 360 exclusive. However developers don't say "For Windows XP" on the packaging of a PS3 game.

2.) You can't use the "should have paid more attention" argument in a court of law. Someone accidentally commits suicide because the gun manufacturer made the gun shoot backwards by a trick switch, "he should have paid more attention to the manual" won't cut it.

Not everyone pays attention to the "Vista only" text on the corner back of the packaging.

Well, you did. So what seems to be the problem? As far as I know, most people are educated about the fact that Halo 2 will be Vista only. I didn't even know that to be qualified as a "Game for Windows" it had to be compatible with Windows XP.

The problem is average Joe won't see "Games for Windows" and think "Games for Vista". The average Joe won't keep track of the OS releases.

I want to have the security to walk into a store, pick out an interesting looking game, and buy it without having to second guess whether M$ bypassed their own requirement system.

Plus I want to play Halo 2 without them having to push a new software requirement to play it.....
