New to Widescreen, looking to purchase LCD

Hey Guys, I am new to widescreen, and I am looking to purchase a wide screen lcd. I been really torn on which one to purchase. I have a budget about $300-$400 dollars. I really don't want to purchase something more expensive unless its really worth it. I been looking at the 19' lcd and I got stuck between none wide screen NEC 90GX2 or the Viewsonic X922, but for alittle more money I could purchase a bigger LCD. I am a gamer. I play alot of GRAW, FIFA 2007, Need for Speed Carbon, Madden 2007, and Fligh Sim X. I have 2 gigs for RAM and 7800GT nVidia. Also my CPU is an AMD 64 4000. I am torn about the Dell 2007WFP. I heard great reviews, but I am worried about the slow response time. I really like the NEC 20WMGX2, but I didn't like the price. Is there any hope for me? I have a CRT and I am finanlly putting it to rest. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I also watch alot of movies on my computer

Get atleast 20" with 1680x1050 native res.

Don't be shy to look at brands like Samsung and LG, ViewSonic is good. I suppose that NEC is also good. And Dell...well everyone says it's good so it must be. Remember to do a search on this forum after you decide, before you buy. We have a lot of good reviews on different monitors.

I highly suggest you go 20"WS, with the budget of $300-400 theres no reason not too :)

Sadly, theres no PERFECT monitor the one that comes closest is the 20" NEC but its out of most peoples price ranges and you could just get a 24" at that price.

If you can buy a monitor and if you dont like it return it in the grace period.

Another great choice for you might be the "LG L204WT"

Also look out for the Samsung 206BW and 226BW this febuary.

Okay, you've given the Dell 2007FPW a consideration, which is good. I'm a gamer too... so I can tell you how it feels on it.

The response time shouldn't matter much here. Anything 16ms and under will net you good image all the time. I've played BF2, BF2142, Guild Wars, and some NFS Carbon. While Carbon has nothing to set a widescreen resolution, BF2 and 2142 can be forced to display at a custom resolution.

I personally think the 2007FPW is worth it in the end. You get svideo, composite, DVI, and VGA inputs at your disposal. As a bonus, you get a 4 port USB 2.0 hub to hook up other devices (ie. webcam, digi-cams, mouse, keyboards, etc.). How ironic, though, that since I have a TV tuner card, I might not use the other video inputs as much as I would like (I've a GameCube, PSone, and Dreamcast).

I'm still evaluating the two monitors I got... but for games, it can handle it, especially if you got the card to render at its native resolution. For movies, it's been wonderful. I managed to view a bit of Final Fantasy VII: Advant Children, some Matrix, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, a glance of Inside Man, Gridiron Gang, Crank, Full Metal Alchemist: The Conquerer of Shamballa, and Truman Show. Seeing them all really makes having a widescreen monitor a nice thing to have.

I looked around and finally went with a Samsung 225BW. I'm perfectly happy with it. Cost no where near what a 24" would have cost. Picture is great with no dead pixels. Games just fine.

I am planning to buy the Sumsang 225BW and to drive it to 1680x1050. Which card do you recommand that can drive this LCD.

My 1900XT doesn't seem to have any problem driving this monitor. Check in these forums for suggestions on settings. Original ones are super bright!

Great thanks. I am playing mostly WOW, WC3, CV4 and AOE3. Can I get all to widescreen ?

Again, check this forum under the Solutions and Detailed Reports area under WideScreenGaming. Most of the games you mention already have a report on if it works right from the box or if you need to "help" it along.

Purchase the Viewsonic VX2025wm, it's awesome!

Within your price range, excellent p-MVA 8-bit panel, vibrant colors and no banding issues. 'Screen door' effect some mention is negligible and only bothers people who ran out their back door as kids without noticing that the screen door was closed and they hit it and bounced back and fell on their butts and the other kids laughed.

Er. Yeah.

So there you go! Buy it! :lol: :wink:

Check the details. If you like them and the monitor itself appeals to you then that is what you should get. I chose the 225BW because of the height adjustment. It was something that is important to me. I've looked at several monitors where the bottom of the screen is way above the desk. Personal preference, I don't like that. I want the screen within about 4 inches of the desktop.

I'm in the same boat as you, the wifey issue that is. Perhaps you can fight back with "how many purses/pairs of shoes/$160 haircuts in a month do you need" and just spend $400 on yourself. Besides, a 20"+ LCD is an investment in your future gaming needs that you won't likely upgrade for 5+ years.

Samsung 225BW! That's what I'm getting. At least LCD prices will come down, so perhaps you can meet your budget in a couple months. I'd wait and not cheap out. CompUsa has the 225BW for $369 w/rebate right now.

I'm pretty new to the widescreen LCD gaming scene, but recently purchased a 20.1 inch Sceptre for like $179.99 after rebate on newegg. The specs were pretty good on it, and reliability-wise (based on user reviews) it seemed you either got a working unit and were extremely satisfied with your purchase or you got a defective unit and Sceptre's allegedly horrid support makes you its b!tch.

I rolled the dice figuring Newegg would take care of me in the event of a dud and lucked out. I'm loving this thing--especially for the price.

Widescreen gaming at 1680x1050 rocks as does the additional desk space for applications.

I love my 225bw! No dead pixels, super bright so make sure you read the review here and on NewEgg. At one of these sites I found some "recommended settings" and they were spot on!

Seems like I paid less than $350 for this monitor. Can't really remember, but I know it was less than $400 (with shipping) and arrived very quickly. I'd highly recommend a 22" model given current pricing. The jump from 22 to 24 inches doubles the price.
