Before I give up and take this game back to the store (I have a serious problem keeping a game that was just released that does not support widescreen res), has anyone else tried to get this thing to work in 1680x1050 or some other widescreen res? I found an XML file in the My Docs/CivCity folder that I was able to edit in the resolution, but when I started the game, it just dropped back to 1024x768.

Here's the line from my CivCityRome.GraphicsSettings.xml

Runs at 1920x1200 just fine on my machine. Did you enter the width as 1680 and height as 1050? Make sure you don't change anything in the xml file in your installation directory, only in My DocumentsCivCity Rome.

Hope this helps.

Editing the xml file works for me, 1680x1050 resolution. Unfortunately there's stretching HUD/FMV and vert- FOV. Kind of odd since this is supposedly using the same engine as Civ4, which had pretty good widescreen support.

Yep. It really screws up the playability of the game, since you have to click quite aways away from a structure to select it. I even tried forcing 1600x1200, and selecting a structure is still off a bit. I don't see it worth forcing widescreen in this game unless someone can find a way to fix the FOV and interface issues. :(

It sticks, I found out, as long as you don't play around with the configuration settings menu that starts when you click the icon. If you disable that menu then it dives right into the game and lets you see everything in its stretched widescreen glory.

I returned the game. I already played Stronghold, Crusader, and Stronghold 2.

I heard that this title was something of a "budget release" for the city builder's genre. Is that correct? Is so it might explain the developers laziness toward supporting widescreen.

Either way thx for posting. I'm interested in getting this one, and its nice to know in advance whether or not to try and tweak the settings or simply 'black bar' it.
