Best game of all time...Does WS make it better?

Post by hodsonc »

I have been inspired by this thread ([url]http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/node/5955] - You'll have to read it all) to start a "Best game of all Time" thread! I'm also intersted if people think WS support makes a game universely "better". Was "version 2" of game "XYZ" more enjoyable purely because the developers added WS?

My top five :

Oni (No widescreen) :(
Re-Volt (WS support) :D
GTA Vice City (WS support) :D
Race Driver 2 (WS Hack) :?
Half Life 2 (WS Support) :D

I know I've been playing PC games for like 10 years - but it's those that come to mind.

Come on! What's your "Greatest Games of All Time"?

EDIT : Yeiks! More like 15 years on the PC! Nearly 30 now - Gaaa! Where's my life gone!

Cool thread! I'm in. 8)

My top five:

1. Sid Meier's Pirates (Commodore 64)
2. Golden Axe (Arcade)
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade)
4. World of Warcraft (PC)
5. Day of Defeat (PC)

In thinking back to my "all time" favorites, I realized how long i've been gaming. :) Also, on the topic of widescreen: I think that true widescreen support has the ability to enhance the visual experience, increase immersion and allow more freedom for the developer to bring their vision to life. However, there comes a point at which every gamer knows - widescreen or no - whether or not a game is right for them, so I don't think its absolutely crucial. More and more people are being attracted to it, and the future looks very bright for widescreen gaming. 8)

Here's my top 5.

1 - Silver
2 - Halflife 1
3 - Halflife 2
4 - Homeworld
5 - Grand Theft Auto Vice City

I don't know it you guys know Silver but it's definitely the best rpg i ever played. Here is an unofficial site with some screenshots. It's pretty old but the way you played the game is still unmatched till today if you ask me. The fighting was completely realtime. You just held the left mouse button and depending on the direction you moved the mouse you could make all kinds of badass moves.

It's funny - always been a PC gamer - my mates had consoles (one mate's even got a coin-op of Golden Axe off of Ebay!) but I never found an experience like PC gaming...

In a dark room, it's late at night... All you can hear is gun shots / swords clashing... You've gotta make it to the door / other side of town... Your heart's beating... You've been hit! Noooo...

Man, gotta love computer games :D

agreed :P i always think that consoles are normally confined to small screens and in built speakers, at least a PC game is normally played close to the screen with some higher level of sound, although most of the basic speakers sound horendous ;)

That was the whole problem with Silver, it was way underestimated back then and therefore it never got off the ground. It doesn't work under Windows XP btw.

It's a virtual machine. Google for more info. :)

I completely forgot Deus Ex! I guess the horror that was DX:IW put me off. Odd I forgot, since I've currently got a shortcut to DX on my desktop...

X-Wing Alliance doesn't have widescreen. Believe me, I tried...

No, I've not tried ArtMoney, but I tried something similar a while back. I never managed to figure out how it handled resolutions. But that was a while ago, and I wasn't quite as good at hex editing then... maybe I should have another go... (if I can get the game running, at least - it crashes at load on my newer systems...)

Man, there sure are some classic games being mentioned in this thread. Looking at the responses, it does seems like WS makes a diffrence. Althought it seems like gameplay (like all the old Atari and Commador games) is even more important to gamers... IMHO I would say that even though games like Paperboy had great playability and were adictive, they can't compete with a modern widescreen offering like Half Life 2.

VMware basicly lets you run 98 / 2000 / whatever, with XP.

So what you have is you're normal XP, then VMware running on your machine that you start up and bobs you're uncle you have options to run 98, 2000, or what ever inside VMware without leaving the XP interface.

Virtual Machine Ware.

HAndy tool. All I need now is a working copy of 98. Anyone got this?

Edit: Isn't Virtual PC 2004 something similar? I now remember i have VPC somewhere.

One other game that I absolutely loved....and that I feel deserves honorable mention is Lucasarts's The Secret of Monkey Island with the SCUMM engine.

Man that game rocked. A true adventure classic. :)
