Call of Duty FOV Discussion
I'm pretty sure this game has been posted here, before, many times. However, I did a search on the forums, and was not able to find the detailed information about it that should be posted. So, here is my thread on widescreen gaming in Call of Duty for PC.
When we make a game widescreen that does not already have widescreen settings, we need to 'hack' it, patch it, or simply switch the resolution and aspect ratio in the video settings of the game, which are usually found in the options menu.
In the case of Call of Duty, or CoD for short, one would use the 'hack' method. For CoD, we would browse to our Call of Duty Main folder (in my case C:Program FilesCall of Duty Game of the Year EditionMain), and open the config.cfg file with notepad, or any text-editing program.
Search for the following in red and change their values to your specific details. Setting r_mode to -1 is to allow the videos in the beginning to play normally, according to your 'hacked' settings.
seta cg_fov "106.63912823033217994834067183241"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customheight "1050"
seta r_customwidth "1680"
Save your changes to config.cfg.
In my case, my monitor (Dell 2005FPW) has a height of 1,050 pixels, and width of 1,680 pixels.
Using a modified (I think a better and more clearer) version of the formula found on this post:
http://htpcnews.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8444
I was able to find my FOV (Field of view).
Here is the formula with all of my info that I used:
FOV2 = 2 x Inverse Tangent [(W/H) x Tangent (FOV1/2)]
W (width in pixels) = 1680
H (height in pixels) = 1050
FOV1 = default CoD FOV, which = 80
CoD FOV2 = 2 x Inverse Tangent[(1680/1050) x Tangent(80/2)]
CoD FOV2 = 2 x Inverse Tangent[1.6 x Tangent(40)]
CoD FOV2 = 2 x Inverse Tangent[1.6 x 0.83909963117728001176312729812318]
CoD FOV2 = 2 x Inverse Tangent[1.3425594098836480188210036769971]
CoD FOV2 = 2 x 53.319564115166089974170335916205
CoD FOV2 = 106.63912823033217994834067183241
I used the Windows (XP) calculator in Scientific mode (View menu > Scientific) to use Tangent and Inverse Tangent. To get the tangent of something, simply click the 'tan' button in the bottom left corner of the calculator when the number you want to get the tangent of is on the calculator's number-viewing area.
To get the inverse tangent, just check the 'Inv' option on the top, left part of the calculator (left of the 'Hyp' option) and press the 'tan' button when the number you want to get the tangent of is on the calculator's number-viewing area.
Looks like a lot of work for a simple widescreen FOV, eh? Well, it's a lot easier than it may look. Just take it one line at a time, fill in all your details, and calculate it. Try practicing with my exact details first, to make sure you can get the correct end results. And then, fill in your details and enjoy a correct field of view for your Call of Duty Single Player experience!

Very nice, we all applaud your mathmatics skills. But this still doesn't address the issue of changing the FOV in Multiplayer, which is all I ever play now anyway.

The same method works with multiplayer. Whether a server allows that depends on if the server is using Punkbuster or not and if the admin has set up Punkbuster to enforce a certain FoV or FoV range.

All servers use PunkBuster! And none of them allow FOV change. It's f***ing bulls***.

I believe I mentioned that this is for single player only. Call of Duty's multiplayer is somewhat dissapointing, anyway. The single player pwnz it!

In that case, my man, you may need to keep an eye on certain servers. I don't know the complete details, however, I think the FOV in multiplayer is controlled by server settings.

Too bad that's not a filter in the server browser. :?

Hrm...did a search for 'seta cg_fov', but this string is not in the .cfg file by default...had to enter it myself! Will this make a difference? Not that I could tell, probably...I also have UO installed, so maybe they removed the FOV command from the .cfg on the expansion?

Perhaps you need to search for your .cfg file in your United Offensive directory. I have yet to install United Offensive. I am still too busy playing the first CoD. When I install UO, I will make sure to follow up with the details here.
Try to look in your United Offensive folder for that default .cfg file, though.

i've tried this but it doesn't seem to work or i'm doing something wrong.
i also have a dell 2005fpw, so i should be able to use the same settings as UrbanSmooth smooth gave, but after editing the .cfg file and when I start cod i get a blank black screen and nothing happens.
i have it hocked up to a ati x300 graphics card.
would it be possible for someone to post up a link where it might be possible to download the cfg file, as playing in a window sucks.
regards,
luke

Just click through the black screens. They are the start up screens. There should be three of them. After that, you should be able to get to your main menu. If not, explain your situation in more detail, please.

Ok, I got United Offensive single player to work! All you do is go to your Call of Duty directory, open the 'uo' directory, and open your 'uoconfig' configuration file. Search for and make these settings like so:
seta cg_fov "106.63912823033217994834067183241"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customheight "1050"
seta r_customwidth "1680"
Save your changes. Open United Offensive, and the first three intro movies should be blank. Click through them. If you change your graphics, audio, or performance settings in United Offensive, make sure you Apply Changes, close United Offensive, open the config file, and change your custom settings back to your desired fov, height, width, save the settings, and open United Offensive again. It should work!
That would be for a 1680 x 1050 resolution (Dell 2005FPW). If you want to use a different resolution, make sure to change the fov according to the formula at the top of the thread.

If the fov line's not there, use 80 as the default fov, or fov1 in your equation, and add the new fov line, the fov that you come up with, using the equation at the beginning of this thread, to your .cfg file.
Do this:
Open Call of Duty single player, of Call of Duty: United Offensive single player. Go to your main menu, and change all the settings that you want. Apply changes, and exit the game. Open your .cfg file and make the necesaary changes for fov and custom widescreen resolution. Save your .cfg file! Open CoD sp again, and it should work.
Remember, you may have to click through three blank screens. That usually means it's working.

The FOV line is still not there. What is annoying is that this has worked in the past, when I played it last. 1920x1200 doesn seem to be working either, it loads up 800x600, and is that when I tried the game.
edit, I used textpad, and the fov line was there. Changed it, and its now working. Is your fov number the same for 1920x1200?
