Tomb Raider Legends Discusion

Post by Paddy the Wak »

Ok ... an update ...

After the first level it runs really badly with the Next Gen stuff ...

Down to about ...
1920x1200 everything at max including Next Gen ...................... 18 -30 fps ... when the action hots up ...

... and there are lots of graphical glitches ... :(

Lara looks much better with the Next Gen stuff all be it with a few things missing compared to that screenshot from 3D Gamers ... :?

New Patch here ...
http://www.3dgamers.com/games/tombraider7/downloads/

The Readme ...
Tomb Raider: Legend by Crystal Dynamics - retail v1.1 patch

This patch addresses the following issues:

- various performance problems
- stability problems
- controller problems

Warning:
The patch does not yet completely resolve the performance issues with the activated Next-Gen content on NVIDIA cards.
NVIDIA actively works on an updated driver that should fully address the problems.

After installing the patch I found it did help with the frame rates a bit but not enough ... I guess what is needed is those updated drivers from Nvidia ...
Some of the graphical glitches are gone ... some are still there ...

2. in this one you can see some odd artifacts on lara's skin in the second shot, not sure what's going on there but it was very noticeable to me while playing.
2A. next-gen content enabled

2B. next-gen content disabled

3. this is pretty much the same spot as the 3dgamers shot, and the shot paddy took. also you can see some more weird graphics glitches in the second shot around lara's legs.
3A. next-gen content enabled

3B. next-gen content disabled

Unless you're talking about something else, the "artifacts" you're talking about in that second pic is actually what happens to Lara after she gets wet. Its a cool looking effect from far away, which is the normal camera angle the game presents.

And those "weird graphical glitches" around her legs in the fourth shot is a poor attempt at reflection (or possibly refraction). Keep in mind that the non-next gen version was primarily developed for the PS2, and for what it is, I still think it looks pretty good.

I have some weird artifacts aswell. Especially when i enable AA i get these weird flickering gray planes all over the place.
I also get a thin white line at the top and the left side of the screen. :?
This occurs in some levels worse than in others.

Sweet, I was just gonna post here about my issues with TRL lagging for no reason too :D... And sure enough, a patch for it already. Whew... I was honestly gonna return the game if it wasn't being fixed. It wasn't playable on my machine... yet Oblivion was fine, lol. Anyways, I'll maybe get to play the game tomorrow. Also one cool note, the 360 controller on PC for this game works by default without configuring controls. It's nice, more games should do that that go multi-platform!...

Anyone still having a prob with the next gen content even after applying the patch? It may be that I'm running the DELL 3007 at 2560x1600 but with next gen switched on it becomes completely unplayable.. Gutted. I'm running 2 7800 GTX XXX editions in SLI so was hoping it might just be playable but no luck..

Hello ...
Are you using the TR-L profile in the Nvidia settings ?

BTW ... from the System Specs in the Profile Page ...
System Specs:
Use this block of text to display your system specs. There is a 512 character limit. Please no images.

Please keep the text (colored text is fine) between sizes 9 and 11 (using BB Code). Run your specs horizontally (rather than vertically),
and limit to four lines at normal forum width.

Sorry this should do it.. I didn't realise the system specs were actually going to appear as a sig.

Until you mentioned it I had totally forgotten about the profiles in nvidia settings - have never used them to date. Do they make a great deal of difference? Will give that a go thanks.

This game makes me mad.

This was pushed out the door too early (at least for the PC). They knew that the next-gen content was unplayable on ANY GPU. Even nvidia cards, which this game proudly displays on the the splash screen. This game is part of the Nvidia "The way it's meant to be played" program, and it was released with terrible performance on ATI AND Nvidia hardware.

The patch improves performance a little, but still doesn't run like it should.

Oh, but here is my dilemma. I am stuck on a level (the 4th location... can't remember the name) because the game will crash the second I use my zip-line. And this particular level you HAVE to use the zipline to progress. I can use my zip-line everywhere except when I actually use it on the object that I'm supposed to use it on. This will immediately drop me to desktop with a "trl.exe has encountered a serious error... " message. I looked this up on the TR forums and saw that others where having the same problem. If you re-install the game and DON'T patch it, you can get past this point. So essentially the patch broke the game. Others that were past this point already when they patched the game are probably fine, but that doesn't really help me. I'm waiting for a new patch, but it is nowhere to be seen.

Pretty disappointing to say the least.

The demo won't let me reassign movement keys to arrows and the next gen contents is disabled. I emailed them and posted on their forums about the keymapping issue and only one person responded, another user, saying that none of the support/dev people respond to posts. So how they hell can they expect anyone to buy a game if the demo doesn't work properly and they give no support whatsoever? I saw lots of tech related complaints on their forums and it really seems like no one responds with any useful info. There was supposed to be a patch for the demo to enable next gen content but they never released it. I've deleted the demo and won't bother with it again.

I just bought this game, and installed it after updating to the Forceware 84.43 driver (thanks to tip on an earlier post in this thread). My game was already patched to ver 1.1 right out of the box. I am really enjoying this game a lot. I'm getting about 45-60 FPS at 1280X720 with AA and everything on, next gen turned off. When I turn Next gen on, Shadows off, and AA off, my framerate drops to about 10-30, depending on the level.

The funny thing is, right away I noticed that the "next gen" sometimes looks ugly, sometimes it looks good. Overall I prefer the look of the game with next gen turned off, as Lara's "next gen" model kinda looks monkey-plasticky. But I have to admit the environments, especially water, usually look way better with Next gen turned on.

There's an interesting article at Tom's Hardware where they went into detail about the differences. http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/17/maxing_out_your_graphics_card_with_tomb_raider_legend/

Is it me or the screenshots in this TomsHardware review look horrible? Both normal and next gen shots.

I was kinda amazed by seeing a Tomb Raider ad on a milk carton. It really shows how popular the Tomb Raider games, and computer/video games in general, are in the UK.

Im just now starting to play thru TR:L since it was on sale cheap at the store a few months back and then I lost my disk.. and just found it.

I have the newest forceware, system specs in the sig, and also its patched to version 1.2 with a new patch not mentioned in this thread (since its kinda old)

I have to say, I can feel my system struggle abit at times with everything max and next gen on @ 1920x1080 but its totally playable. No stutter issues or anything.

Has anybody else had there issues resolved with the 1.2 patch or newer forceware?

I'll have to play with fraps on and see what my actual FPS looks like. I remember with my old forceware and old game version even on my old monitor at 12x10 the performance seemed worse.

somwhere along the lines things must have been fixed.

Off Topic: After I beat TR:L I plan on looking into the Prince of Persia games on PC. Any feedback/recomendations on that?

Yeah. Play the 1989 original first, and make sure you play it on PC. While other platforms may have better graphics, sounds, and/or music, the PC version is the only one with good controls, and you need good controls to play this game.

After that, play the SNES Prince of Persia. It's actually a different game with a new set of levels, even though the basic gameplay and plot are the same. And the controls are still pretty good - much better than the Mac version, which has the second best controls of all versions of Prince of Persia 1.

Prince of Persia 2 isn't as much of a must-play, but I still think it's good. Give it a try. Same for Prince of Persia 3D, though I think that game is a lot better than the reputation it has indicates. All of the bugs I know of have been fixed in patches. The only problem it still has is long load times, and I think this is forgivable considering the levels are HUGE, and quicksave and quickload times are some of the fastest I've seen since Zork.

After that, play Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It's good. Warrior Within is not as good. And I haven't played Two Thrones.

I would definately advise you skip most of that and just buy The Sands of Time, $10 in a jewel case most places... Amazing game.
