Hey that blur helps the visuals a LOT imho :D No more jaggyness and no next-gen 'aaargh too much sun' be-the-vampire kind of effect. Sweet ! I don't suppose it has no impact on peformance though, am I right ?

Blur aside, did anyone try SLI AA with GTA4 ?? Since SLI is unsupported... and AA is missing... Sounds like the reasonable thing to do. :?

Keep'em pics coming Paddy, can't wait to see some chopper shots ;) (I still wonder why you didn't start this thread in the Surround Screenshots section, but many thanks anyway...)

Paddy,

Could we possibly get some nighttime shots? Perhaps from the Annihilator (Police Chopper) or Maverick (Civilian chopper)?

It says what car it is when you get into it, doesn't it? I wasn't aware any cars actually had the names on them in any other sense.

There's probably no AA because it uses deferred rendering. The 360 version probably isn't really AA, and instead it's probably just edge-blurring (kind of like BioShock).

GTAIV is actually more demanding that Crysis when you think about it. Crysis has a lot going on graphically, but not much otherwise. With GTAIV, not only do you have the graphics, but you have the individual AI for every person and car on screen at once. There's so much going on all the time. You're also moving around the city (when driving) at a fast pace. That's a lot of data for new vehicles and people to stream in and get going.

Besides, setting everything to low on the PC version runs far, far, far better than any console version and it still looks better. I don't know why people are whining. It's almost like everyone buys a game and expects it to run fully maxed out. You can easily get a great framerate with no stuttering or anything just by lowering some settings. So what if you can't max it out? It still looks better than the console versions.

I think they did a great job with the port. It has everything the console version has and more. If you were to look at this in the reverse, it's the console versions that should be getting reports of being a terrible port. ;)

Except the PC version installs loads of crap on your system and may simply refuse to work for one in a million possible reasons ;) Sadly the game itself or its graphics are not the #1 concern about the PC release... As for considering the console versions the terrible port here, I guess I kinda see what you may mean but man, you've gone too far

Regarding SLI AA, I had to ask (would've loved to test it myself!) but seeing the blur in action it's obvious some choices have been made, and probably for the better. Even if the engine was supporting AA, applying it over that many objects would only help the framerate hit the ground big time...

How does GTA4 use the PC CPU cores? Does it spread it around or is it mostly on one core?

I've seen reports of people noticing it using about 80% of each core in a 4-core system. So it scales really well across them.

I never actually looked myself yet.

After seeing people say the textures disappear after awhile of play, I went and played the game for about 4 hours straight and still didn't come across a single problem.

AA doesn't necessarily mean it will kill the performance. Forcing FSAA will kill the performance, but 2x MSAA or maybe even 8x CSAA won't have the impact that you might expect. But again, if it's using deferred rendering (which it most likely is), then you can't use MSAA or CSAA.

Paddy, stupid question, I assume you ran the test on your Top Monster PC with the Q 9770 and the SLi 280's.

Could you, would you mind running the test on your Mini Monster PC with Q6600 and the SLi 8800's. Aas this system closely represents mine. Dual 8800 O'Clocked.

Thanks for this if you have time of course.

add "-norestrictions" to your shortcut command line. Keep in mind you have to have RGSC already running for it to work, and hitting the 'Play' button on RGSC window won't enable it. So from scratch, yo ahve to run it twice. Once to start RGSC andn again to start the game.

Pretty stupid, but it works. You should now be able to choose any resolution you monitor can handle. This settings also will let you select "high:" texture, if you cun't already.

Oh and you have to logged in to RSGC as well.

there are more commands on page 2 or 3 of the "GTA and more and more" thread.

Rise, rise from the dead my pretty thread :P Things I've learned about GTA 4 vs triple SLI through trial and error so far:

Triple SLI does work but its roughly the same FPS for me as single card...but I can jack up the pre-rendered frames to 6 and despite the FPS bottoming into the twenties at rare points it feels very smooth the entire time.

I'm using 3x280s, 3840x1024 and patch 7 with very high reflections, high everything else, precision and vsync on and '60' draw distances. I'm also using the RealityIV 1.62 mod which really pushes up the detail and its most taxing state seems to be in heavy rain which is where I bottom into the 20s going across a bridge full of traffic with two islands worth of buildings being drawn across the river's water.

Beyond raising the pre-rendered frames to 6 I found ensuring the 'Prefer max performance' was set otherwise it'd really stutter even with single GPU and drop triple FPS into the single digits, also I found 3-GPU Alt frame 2 was the better performer of the SLI settings. This is using the 260.99 driver since it seems the current WHQL has a fun little issue of the nvidia service lagging out people's systems if they're using triple SLI, and the latest Beta is well not all that hot either for other games.

CPU wise the game is barely touching it, eating 80% of one thread running at 4.7Ghz (go go sandybridge!)
