Media PC for theatre room

Post by JohnnyWakko »

Hi all

I am after a few pointers here.

I have a nice gaming PC which is my only PC actually. It sits in my study, thus no lounge no good for wattching movies etc.

I want to build a Media PC. Something quiet & cheap.

Am I right in assuming a media PC only needs to be able to play video files/music therefore it doens't need anything wizbang except be able to support the resolution of the Screen I am pumping it to?

I want something like this:

-Basic singlecore intel PC
-1 or 2GB cheap arse Ram
-Radeaon 2400Pro PCI (yes! not a PCIe) Graphics card ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131082R )
-XP & Windows Media Player
-TV tuner
-Wireless network (to speak to my other PC)
-Big arse fat arse Hardrive of some desciption
-DVD Drive optional I guess
-Quiet power supply
-Screen at this point will just be my normal TUBED TV

Is there anything I am missing? Couldn't possible cost more than...what? couple of hundred bucks of ebay?

EDIT: YES, I knew I forgot something. The Media PC MUST plays 5.1 sound. So I guess I need a media player that can read that from DVD movie files and translate to a sound card. I guess that will be the expensive part, the sound card, bugger.

EDIT2: Darn it, I just realised that I will need something that will talk to my TV with AVI cables...darn it.

Old Desktop had a 2400pro :P still has it in it.

Did you consider a popcornhour? I am pretty sure steefy has one, 299+cost of bluray/dvd drive and hdd gets you a network ready media player which can stream, torrent, play dvds etc.
