Just because the monitor could do 1600x1200 didn't mean I used it all the time. The refresh rate was 75Hz at UXGA, which flickered badly for me on a desktop. It was bearable in games, but I still did most of my gaming (newer games) and desktop work at 1024x768, which officially managed 100Hz at XGA, but could be forced to 110Hz. I was actually quite glad when TFTs came that didn't "have" refresh rates and didn't flicker, because it cut out a source of migraine-level headaches.

As for higher resolutions again - prices need to come down first. I'd be on a 30" 2560x1600 panel by now if they weren't £1200+...
