5850 / 5770 dilema oh and a bit of Eve
Having lurked on these forums for a while now :) I've finally feel the need stick my head out and ask a few questions.
Triple head is something I've been after for a while and I've slowly built up the hardware to deal with it (Being of low funds). Having just this morning taken delivery of a shiney new Dell P2210 with the all important displayport to accompany my other two 22 inch monitors, I feel im now getting somewhere!
How ever this is where it all falls apart the Card! I can just about stretch to £200 for a 5850 (if im lucky! most are at £220) but stock is non existant in the UK I've already cancelled 2 orders for 5850's that showed up as in stock only to be told that their looking at a month or more  (CCL first and then Scan)
Truth be told I really need to save some dosh and a 5770 might be a better bet if I can run my two favorite games. Eve and COD4 so I'm looking for opinions or if anyones got them benchmarks of either at 3x1680x1050.
As far as future proofing is concerned I'd be looking to CF a 5770 at a later date when the eyefinity drivers are sorted, hell for the price of a single 5850 in the uk at the moment you can justabout get two 5770's its that much cheaper!!

No idea about COD4 but Eve Online has always had great surround-screen compatibility.

COD 4 is really only because I do the odd lan party where it comes up. EVE however is my main aim as it seems to consume most of my game time. Up untill now my gaming has been done on a single 24" using a 9600GT which fine for EVE with max settings, (Except 500+ ship fleet battles but that kills most cards :D)
Im just concerned that if I do go for 5770 I could end up with a lemon :? which not only doesnt do EVE justice but makes my system look a bit poo at my next lan

the 5770 is comparably a 4870. I tell you what, at 4320x900 and max setting on cod, i've never run into any slow down at all. Sorry, but i dont have the equipment to try it at 5040x1050.

Just get a 5770 right now.. im sure it will run all your games even on three screens if u turn down the settings... i dont think you will even have luck finding a 5850/70 for some time....
then later if u want to upgrade your eyecandy i would avoid crossfire.. just sell your 5770 on ebay since it was only ~159 USD any way you wont loose too much on reselling it which you will likely get 80% of your money back... and get a 5870 or 5970 / 5950 ..(whatever will fit your case and power supply)

:D lemon = slang for a piece of junk that is good for nothing e.g. Geforce FX :D
Okay now I feel like im going to commit a mortal sin by saying this, but Im a resolution junkie. I couldnt care less about AA or AF I generally don't use either. As long as I can run at the native res of my panels i'll be happy.
We'll thanks for the advice thus far guys its looking like the 5770 a 5850 would be nice but I just can't find one at a sensible price the only ones available are priced at the same point as the 5870 £270 - £300 ....strangely the 5870 is freely available if I had the cash :)

Well I'm jealous you can even get a 5870.
I've got a 5870 that has started to artifact badly and need to have it swapped out for a good one, but it hasn't been in stock for a while.
(Other than the artifacts) Eve runs great @ 3x1920x1200.
I mainly use it for running 3 accounts and not a single account at that resolution, however it runs fine either way.
Soon, I'm going to need to just take a refund and go with the 5770.

Well I acquired a 5770 from a local computer shop and my DP cable arrived in the post (Which is amazing considering all the strikes at the moment).
Eve runs as smooth as silk at max settings, smoother than my 9600GT did with a single 24".
Now test a few other games and getting used to playing fps without feeling queezy from the huge screen :)

9600GT to 5770 is a nice upgrade. Might as well use the PhysX hack and use the 9600GT as PhysX/CUDA card.

I was quite surprised at the increase in speed despite the fact that the 5770 is shifting double the amount of pixels that the 9600GT did.
As for reusing the 9600gt its already gone a new home, and is paying for part of a new mobo in the process. My ASUS M2N SLi was fine with 2 9600's (the second got sold months ago) but couldnt cope with anything else in the second slot....hell I think it has issue with the 5770 as it takes 4 or 5 attempts to get to post!!! but when it does its fine.
So new mobo probably a Asus again maybe a crossfire capable one as I was thinking in my previous posts.
All in all thus far im happy......except I cant get UT 2004 to play ball :/ but Im sure I'll sort it :D

You bring 3 monitors to a LAN? You're pretty awesome. There is a CoD4 thread in the "Multi-monitor" Forum look it up.

That's what I was gonna say too. The lans I go to would kill me if I hogged enough room for 3 LCDs. I have enough trouble with 1 24" as is at a lan.

:D well the 3 monitors will be going along this time, I've practically been begged to bring them just so people can have drool. Besides it helps that I run it, and we only get 20 or so in a room that could fit 40 :).
Thanks for the COD 4 details got it up and running fine, unreal 2004 aswell although the menus are all over the place. Either way the card hasn't stuttered once yet, so I'm going to gave to find something to push it and find it's limits.
