Isopropyl Alcohol >99% pure is great for cleaning stuff, it evaporates quickly leaving no residue, better for cleaning thermal paste off. IMO

I always lap my CPU and water block (as I normally keep them until they are beyond sensible resale time), and then use AS5.

Have I thanked you lot yet for all the help out here? Anyway, thanks guys, it's much appreciated. Couldn't have done it without you ;)

On the thermal grease, I agree - I know how things work, and found it somewhat strange already. Just chose to do things by the book (the manual) this time. I'm sure it won't cause any overheating. If it did, I'd have noticed by now

Update as well: the BluRay player has arrived and is doing its job just fine. Took me a while to get SPDIF sound running through PowerDVD, but in the end I got it working. Phew, I really feared I'd be stuck with stereo for movies there.
And since I had the case open, I wired the second CPU fan to the casefan connector. Now both are doing their job.

Incidentally, I don't suppose there's a way to tell Windows to stop poking my hard disk every second? The blinking HDD led in the corner of my eye is annoying sometimes. In case of emergency, I could of course just unplug it from the MoBo, but then I'd have no HDD activity led at all anymore :P

...my sig needs updating.

Well!

Looks like you got the right VaporX anyway, the new R2 one has much worse temperatures and is louder at idle

Down to the fact that half of the cooling fan exit is now non-existant :)

Check the characteristics of Rev. 2. Then check my pictures. It's that one I have. Doesn't really matter, it's still a fine card.
Had already noticed the 875 MHz clock in CCC, where 870 was advertised. This explains that bit.

Auto defrag you say? Tsk, my SSD doesn't need defragging. I'll see if I can find it.
Edit: it was scheduled for one day per week. I've turned it off anyway, but it doesn't help :(
It's probably some standard Windows HDD access, which I just haven't noticed before because the HDD light wasn't quite as apparent.

It's Windows 7 caching stuff to memory. Vista did the same, but did it more aggressively which could have a negative impact on performance.

prefetch, auto defrag and pagefile (assuming you have enough RAM) are 3 things that I have heard to turn off for better SSD lifespan and performance.

Read a little more about it here (This isn't specific to OCZ hardware, but it was a guide as to how to get the best from a Vertex).

But no matter I guess...

Let's try this again...

It's Windows 7 caching stuff to memory.

Turning off SuperFetch is easy (it's just a service, so open services.msc and do it from there) but it's not really worth it, as all it's gonna do is slow loading stuff down. RAM is still faster than SSDs. Prefetch is not the same thing as SuperFetch. :)

It doesn't harm the SSD, as it's not writing to it - just reading. You want prefetch off as that writes to the SSD.
