[quote]When the 5870x2 comes out, we should be able to use EyeFinity on it with no problems.

That's one huge assumption without any basis in fact at this point in time.

True, thats why i said "should" :), hopefully im right.

it would be pretty lame if CF doesn't work with eyefinity.

and I do mean LAME, i can understand it not working upon initial release like now but down the road if that's the case and we have to choose between CF or EF... . that would suck

Until they get EF and CF working together in software, any "X2" card won't do EF. :( Unless they allow users a way of disabling the internal CF.

Something tells me we won't see a 5870X2 until they get CF and EF playing together, though.

Triple 2560x1600... yeah. It looks fairly smooth, but I'm betting that it's not much above 30fps, if that.

Might drop the PC Per chap an e-mail and ask.

It was mentioned with this first release of the 5870 card that has 2x dvi, 1x hdmi, and 1x DP that you can not use both dvi ports + hdmi at the same time because the hdmi port shares something with one of the dvi ports.

according to the hardware.fr review which is not yet translated to behardware.com

5870 cards have a total of 6 display pipelines which power 2 DACs for VGA & 6 TMDS/DP (for HDMI/DVI/DP outputs)

2 TMDS are needed per DVI dual link due to their architecture.

which means a total of 4 TMDS for the two DVIs dual link output & 1 TMDS for HDMI & 1 TMDS for Display Port.

so you should be able to use all 4 outputs on this version of the card just fine !

Bummer, gotta wait for the x2 then, thanks

The x2 also needs crossfire support to work. It seems the only way to have a 5870 crossfire + multi monitor gaming, now, is using the matrox triplehead2go, limited of course to 5040x1050.

Actually not really, Crossfire on the x2's work in a lower level invisible to the Operating System, thats how im able to run 3 monitors using SoftTh with a 4870x2 and a 3870.

When the 5870x2 comes out, we should be able to use EyeFinity on it with no problems.
not at all, ATI wants you to believe that, however X2's CF is exactly the same one as independent cards CF, the only difference being that on an X2 ATI CCC won't display the CrossFire panel (and you can still disable CF with tools such as "ATITool")
but this is just a strategy not a hardware difference or limitation at all !!!

edit: the strategy is aimed at users not even knowing that their card runs CF
ATI thinks a user don't have to know what is the underlying software, it should just run (however it doesn't prevent a few issues here and there)

So, potentially, you could put a TH2Go on each of the DVI outputs, i.e. six screens and still have a HDMI and a DP port output for an additional 2...?

Just a thought... :D
