Want to attend the ATI EyeFinity Unveiling for the WSGF?

Post by skipclarke »

ATI is holding an event on the USS Hornet this week (Thursday I think) to unveil the new 5800-series, and will be displaying the EyeFinity in action.

The ship is in the San Fransisco area. Is anyone interested in going? I contacted ATI and they will give us a few spots on the guest list.

Prefer someone with TH2Go experience, and prefer someone who has been active a while. But, in any case I'd like to have someone from the WSGF attend. Since space is limited I will make the final decision on who gets to go.

-neither own a TH2GO

have fun there, and don't forget to get us a lovely report on your findings

Definitely hope WSGF makes some type of showing for the press conference. I'm very interested in how this turns out. Too bad I'm in Kansas or I'd go. ATI wanna fly me in? LOL

Really want to see how this series runs FSX. Their past 2 series of cards have run FSX abysmally any time a cloud is in the sky. It is a deal breaker for me after going from an 8800 to the 4850's to the gtx285 and seeing just how poorly FSX performed on ati hardware unless the sky was clear.

I'm in San Jose so it's about an hour away from me.

If you can let me know about time/duration/costs/etc., and you don't mind being represented by someone with zero press experience, I'll do my best to work this out with my schedule so I can attend.

I'd mostly like to see someone ask meaningful questions that actually knows triple-head gaming. 99% of those press types at that press conference won't know enough about it to ask the right questions and get useful answers.

Things I'd like to know:

How does it handle display rotation? Non-symmetrical display mixing?
How does it differ from Matrox TH2G? SoftTH? nVidia XP Horizontal-Span Mode? nVidia Quadro SLI Matrix Mode?
What hardware configurations work? single card? multi-card?
How is Crossfire effected by EyeFinity?
How does it handle 2 displays? More than 3 displays?
XP/Vista/Win 7? DirextX9/10/11 and OpenGL compatibility?
Will it work with existing ATI cards, or is this hardware specific to the 5000 series?

Lately I've been using portrait rotated 3x 24" 3600x1920 setup. If these new cards could do that, it would blow TH2G out of the water. I'm so tired of all the hoops we have to jump though as surround-screen gamers. I just want something that works with whatever configuration you throw at it, no having to screw with it.

The way I see it, surround-gaming might be the next SLI/Crossfire-like capability war between ATI/nVidia. If it does play out like that, it's good news for us. At this time, that's very highly speculative and wishful thinking on my part though. At the very least I think ATI is beginning to understand there are more than just 1 multi-GPU market to target. ATI and nVidia have had horse-blinders on for years now with a singular focus of parallel scaling multi-GPU to 1 display for 3D use.

depending on how much they show some of this might not need to be asked.

Each monitor can suppost its own resolution or do 2/3 monitors all have to use the same resolution? in windows / games probably all the same but just to make sure.
Max screen resolutions or a screen resolution chart?
What ports can/cannot use on the back of the card for this eye tech?

just adding some questions to the list / maybe bring out more questions from you guys.. 8)

I've gotten GeneralAdmission in touch with the folks at ATI and their marketing team. Hopefully it will all work out.

Just got the first email and it mentions that the event is in the evening, which is good because as of last night my morning/early day schedule just became impossible to change. Keep your fingers crossed that I can attend!

If I can do pics/video I'll bring both cameras with me and shoot as much as possible. If not I'll look into getting a bionic eye before Thursday. ;)

As far as questions go, I need more input from you guys like BHawthorne's list. I'd like to know specifically what everyone wants to know. Ibrin, if you could compile and prioritize eveyone's questions into a final list for me to take that would help tremendously. Assuming I get the chance to ask questions, I'll just run down the list until they tell me to shut up. :D

I pretty much want to know the same things as Brad. EyeFinity is basically TripleHead without the faff, right? Just plug in multiple monitors and span games across them in the impression I get...

Might turn in a proposed list of questions to ATI after you have things worked out. Might expedite them having the answers ready for the questions.

Lately I've been using portrait rotated 3x 24" 3600x1920 setup.

How are you driving that? Seems to be a non-standard res and AR. SoftTH?

We know:
- It will handle monitors of different resolutions.
- That a Crossfire set will support up to six monitors (holy hell).

What we want to know:
- Can you harness the dual GFX boost from Crossfire on 3 monitors?
- Will it handle portrait mode?
- Is there any max resolution?
- Are any special drivers needed per game, or is it simply getting the game configured (i.e., what we do)?
- Does it support DX10 and DX11?
- Are there any Hz restrictions? Can you run at the native refresh of your monitor (possibly higher than 60Hz)?

What does anyone else want to know?
